Highlights

Moshi – Momella Gate (1,500 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)

Mount Meru - In the morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and, after a briefing about your upcoming trek, you’ll begin the scenic drive to Arusha National Park. Upon arrival at the gate, your guide will handle the registration forms and assemble the hiking team before you start your ascent of Mount Meru, accompanied by an armed park ranger. As you walk through the grasslands towards the acacia forest on the southern route, you might spot giraffes and buffaloes grazing lazily on the lush vegetation. After about two hours, you’ll reach Maio Falls, where you can stretch your legs and enjoy a picnic lunch. The journey then continues through the “fig tree arch,” an unusual tree formation created by the wild fig Ficus Thonningii. Another two hours of hiking will bring you to Miriakamba Hut, where afternoon tea and snacks await. You’ll spend the night at Miriakamba Hut.

Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m) – Saddle Hut (3,550 m)

Mount Meru Waterfall - After breakfast, you’ll continue on wooden steps along a steep track. The change in altitude brings a noticeable drop in temperature, making walking seem easier. The low-hanging clouds often shroud the rainforest in mist, creating a moody atmosphere in the lush vegetation. Your uphill trek will take you to “Mgongo wa Tembo” (elephant back) at a height of 3,200 m after approximately 2 hours, where you can take in the scenery and rest before heading onward to Saddle Hut (3,550 m). Along the way, you’ll see the vegetation change from rainforest to heather and moorland. After reaching Saddle Hut, you can opt to hike to Little Meru (3,820 m), a 1 to 1½ hour hike from which you’ll have a fantastic view over Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro about 80 km away. A warm meal and an early night await you back at Saddle Hut, as your wake-up call will be just after midnight.

Saddle Hut (3,550 m) – Socialist Peak (4,562 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)

Mount Meru Waterfall - You’ll be awakened with a small snack and warm tea, after which you’ll start your final ascent. Headlamps will light your way as you follow the trail through bushland to Rhino Point (3,821 m). The path becomes more challenging, and occasional climbing will be required. Following the crater rim, you’ll walk on frozen volcanic ash and rocks before reaching the summit, Socialist Peak, in about 4 – 5 hours. Standing at the peak, you’ll enjoy the breathtaking view of the sun rising above Mt Kilimanjaro and have a fantastic view of Mt Meru’s crater with its steep sides and the “ash cone” in the middle. After taking a few deep breaths of fresh air, you’ll start your descent on the same route back to Saddle Hut (3,550 m), where you can recuperate with hot soup and tea. Once rested, you’ll continue the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m). Tired and happy, you’ll have your evening meal and doze off with the day’s views filling your thoughts.

Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m) – Momella Gate (1,500 m)

Mount Meru Waterfall - After breakfast, you’ll start your final stretch on the so-called “northern route” back to Momella gate. On this 2 to 3-hour trek, you’ll once again have the chance to see giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, and black and white colobus monkeys. Upon arriving at the gate, you’ll bid farewell to your hiking crew and be taken back to Moshi.

Additional Information

Mount Meru reaches up to 4,566 meters, making it the second tallest peak in Tanzania and ranks as the fifth tallest on the African continent. Its unique shape was created approximately 250,000 years ago due to a massive volcanic blast that obliterated its entire eastern side, resulting in a crescent-shaped caldera. Mount Meru offers not only stunning panoramas and a variety of plant life but also the opportunity for wildlife viewing during a walking safari.

As you ascend, you may encounter sizable wildlife, including giraffes, buffalo, baboons, elephants, antelopes, and colobus monkeys. The flora transforms from a lush mountain rainforest to heather and moorland, and ultimately to an alpine desert; as a result, you’ll notice fewer animals, prompting a shift in attention from fauna to the scenery. An armed park ranger will guide and protect you throughout your journey.

Wonderful Adventure in Tanzania - We planned our Mt Meru trek for a couple of months and working with Jackson was a great experience. He took us through the ropes with his detailed explanations, pre-trek info, travel requirements and so on and so on. The trek was great, and we were lucky that the weather was great. Guide Kimario was on top of his game making our trek safe, fun and a romantic couple experience. They provided us with great three hot meals, snacks, candy and hot chocolate, coffee, juices and water. Maua provided waterproof ziploc bags, gaiters and other necessary equipment. Kimario was very thorough in his approach, health checks every evening, briefing on the next day's activities..... We had an awesome experience and will definitely go on the next adventure with Maua Adventures. They are really good
