You’ll pass through a forest reserve on the way to West Kilimanjaro, where you can drive and spot Colobus monkeys among the trees. You begin your hike at 3,500 meters above sea level and proceed through the stunningly untamed Shira Plateau landscape. You’ll step out of the vehicle, put on your shoes, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and hues of Tanzania’s breathtaking wilderness. When the weather permits, you can see views of Kilimanjaro’s northern glaciers and its highest peak, Kibo, while hiking various trails under the guidance of a ranger. The views of the highest free-standing mountain in the world are juxtaposed with the vast plains of the neighboring Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the deep gorge of the Simba River. You will make a brief stop at various observation points along the northern rim of Shira Crater to observe the volcanic cones that dot the surrounding terrain. Following a four-hour hike—or shorter if your legs tire—you will return to your hotel.
