Sailing Through Serenity: My Lan Ha Bay Adventure
Eager to explore the natural beauty of Haiphong, I embarked on the Lan Ha Bay Cruise, a two-day adventure through stunning landscapes and local culture. Join me as I recount the unforgettable journey.
Setting Sail on Lan Ha Bay
As a digital nomad, I often find myself seeking out unique experiences that offer both adventure and a chance to connect with the local culture. The Lan Ha Bay Cruise was one such opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. Nestled in the heart of Haiphong, this two-day, one-night cruise promised a journey through the stunning landscapes of Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. From the moment I stepped onto the traditional wooden boat at Cai Beo Cruise Port, I knew I was in for something special.
Our host, Sun, greeted us with a warm smile and a welcome drink, setting the tone for the rest of the trip. His enthusiasm and excellent command of English made communication a breeze, and he was always eager to ensure our comfort. As we set sail, the breathtaking views of the bay unfolded before us, with fascinating rock formations and the iconic Pen Islet marking our path.
The first day was packed with activities, starting with a delicious lunch of fried squid and duck pasta. We then embarked on a kayaking adventure, paddling through caves to discover secluded coves untouched by other tourists. The lack of formal instruction added to the thrill, and the kayaks were in good condition, making the experience all the more enjoyable. As the sun began to set, we returned to the boat for a cooking class, where we learned to make traditional Vietnamese rice rolls—a perfect prelude to the sumptuous dinner that followed.
Immersing in Local Life
The second day of the cruise was all about immersing ourselves in the local culture. After a refreshing Tai Chi session on the sundeck, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast while taking in the morning vista of the bay. Our next stop was Viet Hai Village, a charming fishing village nestled on the island. We had the option to explore the village by bike or electric car, and I chose the former, eager to soak in the lush greenery and invigorating air.
The bike ride was a picturesque journey, offering glimpses of local life and the chance to experience a unique fish “massage”—a ticklish yet fun sensation as tiny fish nibbled at the dead skin on our feet. For the more adventurous, there was also an opportunity to sample snake and eel liquor, a local delicacy not for the faint-hearted.
As we made our way back to the boat, we were treated to a set lunch featuring squid cake and chicken curry, a fitting end to our exploration of the village. The cruise back to the port was a time for reflection, as we passed by Turtle Islet, a famous landmark in the Cat Ba Archipelago. The entire experience was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.
Comfort and Camaraderie on the High Seas
One of the highlights of the Lan Ha Bay Cruise was the camaraderie among fellow travelers. As a solo backpacker, I often find myself forming connections with like-minded adventurers, and this trip was no exception. The shared experiences of kayaking, biking, and cooking brought us together, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
The accommodations on the boat were thoughtfully designed for comfort, with cozy beds, efficient air conditioning, and fast hot water. Everything was impeccably clean, from the floors to the linens, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. While the provision of water was limited to two 500ml bottles per day, it was a minor inconvenience in an otherwise flawless experience.
As the cruise came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful part of the world. The attentive service, immersive activities, and comfortable accommodations made this a journey to remember. If you’re considering a trip to Haiphong, don’t hesitate to embark on the Lan Ha Bay Cruise—it’s an experience you won’t regret.
