  • Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashinoko (芭の湖, Ashinoko) was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano’s last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone. The lake’s shores are mostly undeveloped except for small towns in the east and north and a couple of lakeside resort hotels.

The best views of the lake in combination with Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone (a few steps south from the sightseeing boat pier), from the Hakone Detached Palace Garden and from the sightseeing boats cruising the lake.

A great day in magnificent Hakone with Yoshi - We had such a lovely day in Hakone with Yoshi, who is an excellent guide. He picked us up at our hotel and had planned for everything: the trains to and from Hakone, every transportation system we would be using inside Hakone, the optimal time we should stay at every location so we would get to see as many things as possible in one day,... He had bought all the reserved seats on the Express train and the Bullet train in advance, which was very practical and easy. We only had to refund him at the end of the tour and didn't have to worry about a thing. Yoshi lived abroad for a number of years, which helps him a great deal when interacting with Western tourists like us. You can learn a great deal about Japanese culture by talking to him and asking him questions: he will answer anything and he's so interesting to talk to. He even sent us a list of things to do in Tokyo after the tour had been completed so that we could make the most out of our week in the city. Hakone is an unforgettable place: we especially loved the Owakudani volcanic valley, which is such an unusual sight, and the Open Air Museum, which was recommended to us by Yoshi.

Thank you Take-san! - We spent some time before the trip debating whether we sought help from a guide, or instead did it ourselves. But we’re pleased we went with a guide because it made for an easier and better day for us, plus we would have missed out on meeting Taketsugu Harada! Take rolled with how taken our (teenage) kids were with Harajuku, so we adjusted the itinerary to suit and it worked out brilliantly. Take found the best Ramen we’ve had, and the day gave us everything we could have wanted - the JR passes helping us get around. We’d never sought the help of a guide before (the travel agent had recommended it), but we’re really glad we did. In a way it means you can see the things you want to see, but you have the added dimension of the local knowledge which can steer you as the day unfolds, plus it’s a great chance to ask about useful tips for the rest of the trip. I think we were very lucky to have Take assigned to us - he is a gentle and knowledgeable man with great patience.

Awesome trip with Nobua (Nobby) around Tokyo - We had an amazing day with Nobua (Nobby), he was extremely polite and knowledgeable about beautiful Tokyo. He was able to incorporate some of our must see spots into his agenda and teach us how to navigate around Tokyo which can be quite confusing at first. Would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for an English speaking guide.

Great half day tour in Hakone - Kozee our guide was patient with our group. He adhered to our very tight schedule but still Managed to show us the highlights of Hakone. Our group of 6 friends had a wonderful time with him. He brought us to a special place for lunch overlooking Lake Ashi. He took us to the ropeway, outdoor museum as well. Also accommodating our request for a kimono rental place ! All in all a great time in Hakone.

Full day but great experience - Had a great day on a Hakone tour with Keiko. She helped us find the best way to get from Tokyo to Hakone and met us at our hotel to guide the journey. It was a full day, but she provided excellent guidance on activities and direction for the area, even advising when it might be too much for one day. It was a tiring day, but a good one and I'm glad Keiko was there to help us see this beautiful area of Japan.

Terrific experience of rural Japan’s besuties - Traveling throughout Hakone is a beautiful experience of rural Japan. The guide Nobu was wonderful at bringing us to all the main stops, with literally 10 changes of transport from trains to ropeway to cable car to boat to bus. It went smoothly and without stress while enjoying the countryside and hills and lake and castle, and a good lunch. A pleasure in all.

Hanoke Tour - We had a great day with Yumi at Hakone. She took us to many of the hot spots. She was very friendly and provided us with lots of her knowledge and legends. The weather was fantastic although we were only able to see the tip of Mt. Fuji as Yami would say "the mountain is quite shy". Yumi was prompt and did a great job planning and communicating with us. Definitely would do it again.

Hakone: lake Ashikono and Mount Fuji summit tour - My tour guide Minoru was really knowledgeable. Even though due to cloudy weather the view of Mount Fuji was not super clear but he took me to spots to have the best views possible. He also was very helpful to aid me in buying a train ticket to Kyoto. I learned unique things about the Hakone area, such as the prevalence of onsens and black eggs cooked with steam from the volcanic sulfur ridges !
