ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF DECEMBER 7 - DECEMBER 8, 2024

Pre-Holiday Tranquility in Hakone: Embrace the Calm Before the Festive Season

Escape the pre-holiday rush and find tranquility in Hakone’s hot springs, where cool, partly cloudy weather sets the stage for relaxation and cultural exploration. Discover the serene beauty of Mount Fuji, Hakone Shrine, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, all while enjoying the region’s unique blend of tradition and nature.

Embracing Serenity in Hakone’s Hot Springs

As the year draws to a close and the festive season looms on the horizon, there’s no better time to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in the tranquil embrace of Hakone’s hot springs. Nestled in the heart of Kanagawa, Hakone offers a serene retreat where you can unwind and rejuvenate amidst breathtaking natural beauty. On December 7th and 8th, the weather in Hakone is expected to be cool and partly cloudy, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of relaxation and exploration.

Start your day with a visit to the Hakone Hot Springs from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. This experience promises a journey through scenic roads, offering magnificent panoramas of Mount Fuji, Hakone, and the Sea of Japan. As you soak in the thermal waters of the onsen, let the stress of the year melt away. The onsen experience is complemented by a delicious authentic Japanese meal, allowing you to savor the flavors of the region. A review from August 2024 highlights the uniqueness of this experience:

Unique cultural experience- not your usual Mt Fuji tourist trap! - This was a truly unique experience! Instead of joining the hordes of tourists on the “traditional” Mt Fuji tour, we had the opportunity to photograph the mountain, visit a Shinto temple and view the gorgeous Hakone region where the Japanese actually vacation! The highlight was the opportunity to spend the afternoon in an Onsen! This included a traditional lunch, dip in the hot springs, and a total body massage therapy (the latter was a fraction of the cost in the USA!). Highly enjoyable way to spend one of our last days in Japan and appreciated by both adults and teenagers. We would recommend to all travelers as a truly authentic and relaxing cultural experience! Elie was a magnificent guide- Highly recommended! (Reviewed at: 2024-08-03)

Discovering Hakone’s Cultural Gems

Beyond the soothing waters of the hot springs, Hakone is a treasure trove of cultural and historical sites waiting to be explored. The Hakone Shrine, located on the shores of Lake Ashi, is a must-visit destination. Founded in 757, this Shinto shrine is steeped in history and offers a peaceful setting for reflection and contemplation. As you wander through the shrine’s grounds, you’ll encounter the iconic Torii gates, which stand as a testament to Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

For art enthusiasts, the Hakone Open-Air Museum is a delightful stop. This museum, set within 70,000 square meters of lush gardens, features an impressive collection of sculptures by renowned artists such as Picasso and Henry Moore. The museum’s open-air setting allows you to enjoy art in harmony with nature, making it a truly unique experience. If the weather takes a turn, the Pola Museum of Art offers an indoor alternative, showcasing a world-class collection of Western and Japanese paintings.

Scenic Drives and Panoramic Views

Hakone’s scenic roads offer some of the most breathtaking views in the region. The Hakone Turnpike Daikanyama Parking lot is a perfect starting point for a drive that promises stunning vistas of the valley, Hakone, and Mount Fuji. Even on a cloudy day, the foggy and green landscape creates an enchanting atmosphere that is sure to captivate your senses.

As you continue your journey, the Lake Ashinoko Sky Line provides an opportunity to get even closer to Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi. With four panoramic viewpoints along the road, you’ll have plenty of chances to capture the beauty of the landscape. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or simply looking to soak in the views, this drive is a highlight of any trip to Hakone.

In conclusion, Hakone offers a perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for those seeking pre-holiday tranquility. With its hot springs, cultural sites, and scenic drives, Hakone invites you to embrace the calm before the festive season and create lasting memories in this enchanting part of Japan.
