Highlights
  • Zenko-ji Temple - As one of the oldest, largest, and most important Buddhist temples in Japan, Zenko-ji is the spiritual heart of Nagano. A registered National Treasure, the temple’s near-1400 year history is full of legend and myth which your guide will help you unlock as they guide you around the temple precinct followed by time to explore for yourself (time-permitting).
  • MONZEN TERRACE ENYA - Nagano is Japan’s second largest producer of ‘sake’, meaning no trip to the region is complete without sampling some of the local breweries. Your guide will introduce to the complex and warm world of sake with a guided tasting and while there also treat you to a delicious lunch at one of Nagano’s favorite restaurants.
  • Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park - Established in 1964, Nagano’s world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is home to the only troop of monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs. With no barriers between you and the monkeys (don’t worry, they are very calm) this is a unique opportunity to observe these curious creatures in close proximity as the walk about you, wrestle with each other, endlessly groom, and of course, soak in their favourite hot spring! Your guide will introduce you to everything that makes them so unique and famous while giving you plenty of time to explore for yourself.

Please note that estimated time at the monkey park includes walking in and out along the forest trail - 1.6km each way / 25 minutes each way in summer, slightly longer in winter. We endeavour to give our guests 1 hour in the park to observe the monkeys.

  • During the winter it is common to see the monkeys enjoying the hot spring however from spring up to autumn there will be times where the monkeys play or eat in the water, however please note that the monkeys are wild animals and there is no guarantee that there will be monkeys in the bath.
  • There are a few days in the year that the monkeys might not come down to the park, arrive late or leave early. While this is unlikely, it is possible and is outside of our control.

A day spent with a passionate Guide! - It’s a must do tour if you are visiting Nagano area. I strongly recommend you to stay and soak into Nagano before you start the next morning with these people - starting from the famous ZENKO-JI temple. We are particularly impressed with the guide accompanying us throughout the day. But for this girl, Kay, we, a couple with several medical conditions couldn’t have made it to the Snow Monkey park. This beautiful girl had literally escorted us all the way up and back. Such personal care makes the tour company unique and highly recommended!

Snow Monkeys and Zenko-ji Temple - Great tour. Snow Monkeys are incredible, and the Zenko-ji temple was worth seeing. Worth taking some time away from Tokyo to do.

Delightful Snow Monkeys - We’re just back from this tour - we thoroughly enjoyed it, and thanks to Endo-San for his informative narration and guiding us through the Zenko-ji temple, sake tasting and the Snow Monkey experience, with a splendid lunch to absorb the sake and keep us going through the walk to the monkeys! There’s lots of young macaques there at the moment. It’s a little over a mile walk through forest from the coach park to the Snow Monkey area, and recently there’s been quite heavy snow compacted under foot, so in winter DO wear good walking boots. Enza cafe sells really good homemade apple pies as your reward for making it back - do try one!

Great full day outing - Enjoyable day with knowledgable guides who are happy to expound on additional information. The monkey park is a moderate walk from the drop off but worth the experience, even wild boars were seen. Lunch is a good feed but if still hungry you can buy some local apple products at a cafe at the monkey park.

Exceeded Expectations! - Excellent tour! Saw the snow monkeys and had a great day out with my disabled elderly father. Vegan friendly meals and non-alcoholic sake tasting. Suggest you buy or rent snow spikes for ice parts. Also for great pics use an 8x optical zoom or greater camera. Use a one inch or greater camera sensor camera if possible.

Excellent experience - My husband and friend loved this tour. The temple was a wonderful experience and lunch was excellent in a lovely Cafe. The walk to the monkeys was so scenic and so many great photos moments. Loved the monkeys in their environment and we were lucky to witness the feeding and also saw a Japanese serow !!! Keiron was a great guide and we would highly recommend this tour when in Japan.
