Highlights
  • Zenko-ji Temple - As one of the oldest, largest, and most important Buddhist temples in Japan, Zenko-ji is the spiritual heart of Nagano. A registered National Treasure, the temple’s near-1400 year history is full of legend and myth which your guide will help you unlock as they guide you around the temple precinct followed by time to explore for yourself (time-permitting).
  • MONZEN TERRACE ENYA - Nagano is Japan’s second largest producer of ‘sake’, meaning no trip to the region is complete without sampling some of the local breweries. Your guide will introduce to the complex and warm world of sake with a guided tasting and while there also treat you to a delicious lunch at one of Nagano’s favorite restaurants.
  • Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park - Established in 1964, Nagano’s world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is home to the only troop of monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs. With no barriers between you and the monkeys (don’t worry, they are very calm) this is a unique opportunity to observe these curious creatures in close proximity as the walk about you, wrestle with each other, endlessly groom, and of course, soak in their favourite hot spring! Your guide will introduce you to everything that makes them so unique and famous while giving you plenty of time to explore for yourself.

Please note that estimated time at the monkey park includes walking in and out along the forest trail - 1.6km each way / 25 minutes each way in summer, slightly longer in winter. We endeavour to give our guests 1 hour in the park to observe the monkeys.

More than monkey memories 🙊🙉🙈 - This tour was voted best of the best for good reason. Shawn was an organized and responsible guide, and the logistics went smoothly without a hitch. Kevin was prompt in answering our clarifications at the point of booking. We saw more monkeys than we thought we would, considering the hot summer’s day.

Monkeys, some sake, and a temple - This was a great day trip for our family. Our tour guide accommodated our request to meet the guide at the Temple (the first stop of the day) as we were staying close by. Jens explained the history of the Buddhist temple and then gave us free time to explore and shop in the pedestrian streets. Next we walked to the sake tasting where we learned the process and tasted the differences of various sake(There were a few options for the kiddos.) Then it was off to the mountains for a delicious lunch and snow monkeys! The lunch was amazing with tempura, soup, tea, sushi, and steamed beef plate. The 30min hike to the monkeys wasn't difficult (first 200m was uphill but then it was a flat stroll). Then...hundreds of monkeys. They aren't aggressive, but will get close and aren't scared off by humans. Overall a fun filled day with Jens and the monkeys!

Great Tour. Better than expected. - The tour was fantastic. The tour guide, Kevin, did a great job. At the Temple, he explained history and background and helped us experience the Temple in a more personal way. The sake tasting and lucnh were both very well done. And the monkeys were better than expected. And again, Kevin's knowledge and personal touch made the tour that much better. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone in Nagano.

A perfect day! - All of the stops on this tour were extremely interesting. Kieron is an excellent guide, extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and with a good sense of humor. He was attentive and accommodating to everyone in the group. I chose this tour because it allocated more time than others to the snow monkeys and appreciated that we had ample time to observe them. Our lunch was in a beautiful setting in the woods in a quiet restaurant. The food was delicious and beautifully plated, and the service excellent.
