• Jail - Visit the historic Half Moon Bay Jail. Before a jail was constructed in Half Moon Bay, offenders were detained in a wooden shed in the backyard of a judge’s home, which also served as the town’s courthouse. The conditions were so poor that the town’s newspaper advocated for a new jail, leading to the construction of the Half Moon Bay Jail in 1919, which still stands today as a historical museum.

Although the California Gold Rush attracted ambitious settlers to the town, it also inevitably drew in troublemakers.

Primarily used as a sheriff’s office and holding cell, the Jail operated until the 1960s, accommodating numerous overnight bookings and inebriated revelers, while more dangerous criminals were transferred to the county jail in Redwood City. By the 1970s, the Jail served as the location for the County’s Mental Health Services office before being handed over to the city.

• Half Moon Bay - Half Moon Bay City Hall, circa 1922, is a quaint building that resembles a bank because it once was. Initially, it was the Bank of Half Moon Bay, then the Bank of Italy, and later Bank of America. Located at 501 Main Street.

• Half Moon Bay Coastside Trail - Half Moon Bay, situated along the Pacific coastline in California, boasts a rich history of ocean protection and conservation efforts. The area includes various marine protected areas (MPAs) established to protect their marine ecosystems and preserve the habitats of various marine species, such as the Moss Beach tide pools or the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

• Mavericks Beach - Discover Mavericks, a renowned big wave surf spot in Half Moon Bay, California, discovered in the late 1960s. It gained fame in the early 1990s due to a Surfer Magazine photo. Named after a dog named Maverick, the spot features some of the world’s largest waves and prestigious surf contests. Mavericks remains an iconic and challenging destination for seasoned surfers.

Mavericks gained global recognition for its massive waves, sometimes exceeding 50 feet, making it a top destination for some of the world’s best big wave surfers. In 1999, Mavericks hosted its first official big wave surf contest, which continues today as one of the most prestigious big wave competitions in the surfing world.

Over the years, Mavericks has become a symbol of big wave surfing in California and remains an iconic and challenging location for experienced surfers to test their skills against nature’s immense power.

• Half Moon Bay - The James Johnston House (circa 1855) – This unique saltbox-style home, known as The White House of Half Moon Bay, was built by affluent Half Moon Bay pioneer James Johnston. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Located at 110 Higgins Canyon Road.
