Before a jail was constructed in Half Moon Bay, offenders were detained in a wooden shed in the backyard of a judge’s home, which also served as the town’s courthouse. The conditions were so poor that the town’s newspaper advocated for a new jail, leading to the construction of the Half Moon Bay Jail in 1919, which still stands today as a historical museum.
Although the California Gold Rush attracted ambitious settlers to the town, it also inevitably drew in troublemakers.
Primarily used as a sheriff’s office and holding cell, the Jail operated until the 1960s, accommodating numerous overnight bookings and inebriated revelers, while more dangerous criminals were transferred to the county jail in Redwood City. By the 1970s, the Jail served as the location for the County’s Mental Health Services office before being handed over to the city.
