- Elbphilharmonie - The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) is a renowned concert hall located in the HafenCity district of Hamburg, Germany, on the Grasbrook peninsula along the Elbe River. It ranks among the largest and most acoustically advanced concert halls globally. Affectionately known as Elphi, the modern glass structure resembles a raised sail, water wave, iceberg, or quartz crystal. It is perched atop an old warehouse (Kaispeicher A, constructed in 1963) near the historic Speicherstadt and was designed by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. Standing at 108 meters (354 ft), it is the tallest inhabited building in Hamburg. The Elbphilharmonie was officially opened with performances by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and a light show on January 11, 2017.
- Hamburg Town Hall - Hamburg City Hall (German: Hamburger Rathaus) serves as the seat of local government for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany. It houses the government of Hamburg and one of Germany’s 16 state parliaments. Situated in the Altstadt district at Rathausmarkt square, it is close to the Binnenalster lake and the central station. Built between 1886 and 1897, the city hall continues to fulfill its original governmental roles, including the office of the First Mayor of Hamburg and meeting rooms for Hamburg’s parliament and senate (the city’s executive branch).
- Speicherstadt - The Speicherstadt (literally: ‘City of Warehouses’) in Hamburg, Germany, is the world’s largest warehouse district, with buildings supported by timber-pile foundations made of oak logs. Located in the port of Hamburg within the HafenCity district, it was constructed from 1883 to 1927. The district was established as a free zone for transferring goods without customs duties. Since 2009, both the district and its surroundings have been undergoing redevelopment. It became Hamburg’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 5, 2015.
- Chilehaus - The Chilehaus (Chile House) is a ten-story office building in Hamburg, Germany, situated in the Kontorhausviertel. It is a remarkable example of 1920s Brick Expressionism architecture. This large, angular building occupies a site of approximately 6,000m², spanning Fischertwiete Street in Hamburg. Designed by German architect Fritz Höger, it was completed in 1924.
- Reeperbahn - The Reeperbahn is a vibrant street and entertainment district in Hamburg’s St. Pauli area, one of the two hubs of Hamburg’s nightlife, alongside Sternschanze, and also the city’s main red-light district. In German, it is also known as die sündigste Meile (the most sinful mile) and Kiez. The Reeperbahn Festival is one of the largest club festivals.
- St. Michael’s Church - St. Michael’s Church (German: Hauptkirche Sankt Michaelis), commonly referred to as Michel, is one of Hamburg’s five main Lutheran churches (Hauptkirchen) and a prominent landmark in the city. It is considered one of the finest examples of Hanseatic Protestant baroque architecture. Unlike many other Hamburg churches originally built by Roman Catholics and converted during the Reformation, St. Michaelis was purposefully constructed as a Protestant church. It is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, with a large bronze statue above the church portal depicting the archangel defeating the devil. The 132-meter high Baroque spire, entirely covered in copper, is a notable feature of Hamburg’s skyline and has long served as a navigational landmark for ships on the Elbe River.
- Alster - The Alster is a right tributary of the Elbe River in Northern Germany. Originating near Henstedt-Ulzburg, Schleswig-Holstein, it flows southward through much of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, joining the Elbe in central Hamburg. The Alster is Hamburg’s second most significant river. While the Elbe River is a tidal waterway of international importance and susceptible to flooding, the Alster is a non-tidal, slow-moving river that offers a serene natural setting in some areas and a landscaped urban environment in others. In the city center, the river forms two lakes, both of which are prominent features of Hamburg’s cityscape.
