Surfing Through Time: A Day in the Ancient Ruins of Hampi
When the waves are calm, I find myself drawn to the whispers of history. This time, it was the ancient town of Hampi that beckoned, promising a day of exploration through its enchanting ruins and rich culture.
A Journey Back in Time
As a nomadic surfer, my life is usually spent chasing the perfect wave, but every now and then, I find myself drawn to the allure of history and culture. This time, it was the ancient town of Hampi that called out to me. Nestled on the banks of the River Tungabhadra, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a place where the past whispers through the ruins of temples and palaces. I was eager to explore this open-air museum, and the day excursion promised an adventure unlike any other.
The journey began with a visit to the Virupaksha Temple, a magnificent 15th-century structure carved in stone. The temple’s walls and pillars are adorned with sculptures depicting scenes from Shiva’s life and episodes from the Hindu epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. As I wandered through the temple, I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the musical columns that produce enchanting sounds when tapped. It was a surreal experience, one that transported me to a different era.
Exploring the Ruins
The next stop was the Vijaya Vittala Temple, famous for its stunning architecture and the giant stone chariot that stands proudly on its grounds. The intricate carvings on the temple walls tell stories of Hindu mythology, military conquests, and the daily life of the citizens of the Vijayanagar Empire. As I explored the pillared halls, I felt a sense of awe at the craftsmanship and artistry that had gone into creating such a masterpiece.
One of the highlights of the day was the visit to the underground temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This 14th-century temple remains submerged in water for most of the year, and its mysterious construction several feet below ground level adds to its intrigue. The reason behind its unique design remains unknown, but standing there, surrounded by the cool, damp air, I felt a connection to the ancient world that was both humbling and exhilarating.
A Taste of Royalty
After a morning of exploration, it was time to refuel with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. The flavors of South Indian cuisine were a delightful treat, and I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a rich culture.
The afternoon was spent exploring the Royal Center, where the old bazaar and the King’s balance awaited. The King’s balance, a fascinating relic, was once used to weigh the kings of the Vijayanagar Empire in gold, silver, and precious stones, which were then distributed to the poor. The elephant stables, Lotus Mahal, and the Queen’s Bath were other intriguing sights amidst the ruins, each telling its own story of a bygone era.
As the day came to an end, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey I had just experienced. Hampi is a place where history comes alive, where the past and present coexist in harmony. For a surfer like me, it was a different kind of adventure, one that left me with a deeper appreciation for the world and its many wonders. If you ever find yourself in South India, I highly recommend taking a day to explore the enchanting ruins of Hampi. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
