Ahu Akivi, Ahu Vinapu, and Puna Pau Archaeological Tour:
Embark on a 3.5-hour journey to explore the mysterious stone giants within the protected Rapa Nui National Park on Easter Island. This UNESCO World Heritage site features approximately 900 moai, statues carved from volcanic stone, believed to depict Rapa Nui ancestors and esteemed tribal leaders. Typically, moai stand 13 feet (4 meters) tall and weigh 14 tons (13 metric tons), with many positioned on ahu, or ceremonial platforms.
Visit Ahu Akivi to discover why its seven moai uniquely face the ocean. At Ahu Vinapu, learn how its Incan-like masonry suggests that Easter Island may have been visited earlier than commonly thought. Continue to Puna Pau to view pukao, or topknots, adorning several moai heads. Make a brief stop in the harbor town of Hanga Piko to see a restored ceremonial moai.
Tahai, Orongo, and Rano Kau Half-Day Tour:
Uncover the archaeological marvels on the island’s southwestern coast during this 3.5-hour tour. Stroll through the Tahai ceremonial complex, where restored moai of various sizes and shapes stand at the ahu of Ko Te Riku, Tahai, and Vai Uri. Inside the Ana Kai Tangata cave, located along the crashing surf, observe numerous bird motif petroglyphs and hear tales of the ancient ‘Tangata Manu’ ritual, where Rapa Nui men swam to a nearby islet in a race to collect the first egg laid by a sooty tern.
Enjoy breathtaking views of the Rano Kau volcano and its crater lake before proceeding to the village of Orongo, home to over 50 elliptical-shaped shale dwellings. Learn about the village’s significance in birdmen rites from the 17th to 19th centuries, and then explore the grounds independently.
Rano Raraku and Anakena Beach Full-Day Tour Including Lunch Tour:
Spend a full day exploring the southeastern and northeastern regions of Easter Island. Discover Ahu Akahanga in its original state and learn about its toppled moai scattered throughout the area. Then, visit Ahu Tongariki, the largest ceremonial site with 15 upright moai, restored after being devastated by a tsunami. At the Rano Raraku volcano and quarry, where the Rapa Nui sculpted moai, observe the hundreds of moai heads and partially visible torsos emerging from the grassy hills.
After enjoying a BBQ lunch (provided), proceed to Ahu Te Pito Kura to marvel at the tallest moai ever erected and a round magnetic stone known as the ‘navel of the world.’ Conclude the day at Anakena Beach, a stunning cove of white sand framed by coconut palm trees, believed to be the landing site of the island’s first Polynesian settlers. While blue waters and soft sand may be familiar, it’s not every day you can relax on a beach with the six remarkably well-preserved moai of Ahu Nau Nau behind you.
