Begin the day with a pick-up from the hotel in Hangzhou around 9 am for an exciting one-day walking tour of West Lake. This freshwater lake is divided by the Bai Causeway, Su Causeway, and Yánggōng Causeway, and is adorned with numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, and man-made islands.
The tour kicks off at the renowned Broken Bridge in the West Lake Scenic Area. Cross the bridge to step onto the Bai Causeway, a 0.62-mile-long embankment lined with plum trees and weeping willows, offering delightful scenery, especially in spring. This causeway stretches northward, beginning at the “broken bridge,” passing through the “golden ribbon bridge,” and concluding at the “autumn moon on a calm lake,” making for a fascinating journey.
As the walk continues, the next stop is Quyuan Park (Crooked Courtyard), which features the largest natural water supply into West Lake and a diverse array of lotus plants. When in full bloom, the lotus flowers display vibrant reds, golds, and whites in various shapes and forms. The broad leaves float leisurely on the clear lake waters, with low bridges weaving among the flowers, creating a mesmerizing view that captivates visitors.
The crooked courtyard connects with Yuehu Lake via the Su Causeway to the east and leads to Guos’ Estate to the south. The walk proceeds south to the Su Causeway, which features six arched stone bridges spanning the lake: Ripples Reflection Bridge, Locking Waves Bridge, Viewing Hill Bridge, Suppressing Dike Bridge, Eastern Lakeside Bridge, and Crossing Rainbow Bridge. Known as one of the Ten Scenes in West Lake, “Spring Dawn at Su Causeway” is a must-see for those exploring the elegance of West Lake and enjoying the romantic atmosphere of Hangzhou.
Adjacent to Su Causeway is Flower Harbor (Huagang) Park, home to a pool of vibrant fish. The ideal time to visit is late spring to early summer when the park is in full bloom. “Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor” is also among the top ten West Lake Scenes.
Leifeng Pagoda, located on Evening Glow Hill, is situated on the southern shore of West Lake. Recognized as one of the top ten West Lake Scenes, “Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow” refers to the stunning view of the pagoda bathed in the sunset’s glow.
The tour concludes by walking through the Long Bridge to a lakeside park, “Orioles Singing in the Willows,” another of the top ten West Lake Scenes. With its lush trees along the winding bank, the park attracts birds fluttering by.
After the tour, return to the hotel.
