Jinghang Grand Canal Hangzhou - Visit Gongchen Bridge (拱辰桥)
Spanning the Grand Canal in an east-west direction, Gongchen Bridge marks the southern terminus of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is the largest stone bridge in Hangzhou.
The people of Hangzhou hold a deep affection for this bridge. In many ways, it symbolizes home and can evoke fond memories.
Gongchen Bridge is also rich in history and has royal associations. The name “Gongchen” means “salute the emperors.” Each autumn, a fireworks display was traditionally held here, attracting thousands of visitors. However, in 2013, this activity was banned due to accidents that injured some spectators and concerns over financial waste.
Gongchen Bridge was constructed in the 4th year of Emperor Chongzhen’s reign during the Ming Dynasty (1631). It underwent a complete restoration in 1888 during Emperor Guangxu’s reign. Measuring 98 meters long and 16 meters high, it consists of three arches. It borders the Qiaoxi Historic Block to the west and Yunhe Culture Square to the east. This area is one of the top three cultural and entertainment centers along the Grand Canal (Hangzhou section). Six state-of-the-art museums, boutique restaurants, unique shops, and time-frozen alleyways await you.
