Sesriem Campsite
Namib Desert - The Namib Desert is the world’s oldest desert, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia’s coastline into southern Angola and even the northern Cape Province of South Africa, the Namib commonly refers to the vast sea of sand extending from Luderitz to Swakopmund. This vast expanse of breathtakingly beautiful sandy desert features remarkably varied scenery including, the massive red dunes of the world-renowned Sossusvlei, the moonscapes of the Namib-Naukluft Park, the stark beauty of the Atlantic Coast and a diversity of fauna and flora. This windswept, arid, ancient landscape is teeming with desert-adapted wildlife such as endemic chameleons, brown hyenas, gemsbok, jackals, and seals along the coastline and a variety of plant life including the famous welwitschia plant, a unique living fossil.
Elim Dunes - We leave Windhoek at 9h00 to allow us enough time to get to our destination before sunset. From Windhoek, we are heading southwest, first through the Khomas Hochland Mountains before descending onto the plains of the Namib Desert. The Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, stretches some 2000 km along the west coast of Namibia, with varying types of terrain, but it is here, in the Sossusvlei region that is known for its enormous dunes, and breathtaking photographic opportunities. On arrival at Sesriem, we can set up camp before having some time to relax by the pool and then heading off for a short walk and relaxing sundowner drink at Elim’s Dune before dinner.
Deadvlei & Sosusvlei Guided Excursion
Deadvlei - A very early start this morning for our Sossusvlei guided excursion. We aim to leave camp well before sunrise to ensure that we are one of the first to enter the national park. From Sesriem, we drive further into the desert area, where the early morning light provides excellent opportunities for photography. Once we arrive in the 4x4 car park, we can then explore this area on foot, with a walk around Dead Vlei and Sossusvlei, and for the adventurous, a hike up Big Daddy, the tallest dune in the region, offering breathtaking views of the sand sea that is the Namib Desert. By midday, we make our way back towards Sesriem with a stop at Sesriem Canyon, a small but important landmark for both the human and animal residents of the area. We then make our way back towards Sesriem where we’ll have time to rest and relax before dinner.
Naukluft Mountains.
Namib-Naukluft Park - This morning after breakfast we break camp and depart Sesriem to make our way back to Windhoek passing the Naukluft Mountains. There is an option to stop en route and visit Neuras, a wine farm and wildlife sanctuary on the edge of the Namib Desert. Should we wish, we can enjoy an optional activity before making our way through Klein Aub, and Rehoboth and arriving in Windhoek no later than 17h00. We will be dropped off at our accommodation (not included) and say goodbye to our guide.
