As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can bring families closer together. So, when I heard about the Private Authentic Family Lunch in Hardomilje, I knew it was something I had to try. Our day began with a friendly pick-up by Ante, our guide for the day, right from the heart of Dubrovnik. Despite running a bit late, Ante was incredibly accommodating, setting a relaxed tone for the day. As we drove through the picturesque landscapes, Ante shared fascinating stories about the region’s history, making the journey as enriching as the destination itself.

A Feast for the Senses

Upon arriving at Ante’s family home, we were greeted with the warmest hospitality. Ante’s mother had prepared what she called “appetizers,” but they were more like a grand feast! The spread included fresh prosciutto, salami, homemade bread, and a variety of cheeses and jams. The bell pepper spread was a standout, and I couldn’t resist buying some to take home.

The homemade wine and grappa were delightful accompaniments, and the cherry cake was a dream come true. It was a meal that not only filled our bellies but also our hearts, as we felt the love and tradition in every bite. This was more than just a meal; it was a celebration of family and culture.

Exploring Mostar and Beyond

After our sumptuous meal, we set off to explore Mostar, a city rich in history and charm. Ante’s knowledge of the area and his personal stories added depth to our visit. We had just the right amount of time to take in the sights, shop for souvenirs, and capture memories with our cameras.

On our way back, we stopped at Ante’s family home to meet their adorable donkeys and visit the mini waterfalls. It was a serene and beautiful end to a perfect day. As we drove back to Dubrovnik, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such genuine hospitality and to learn about a way of life that has remained unchanged for generations.

This day in Hardomilje was more than just a culinary tour; it was a journey into the heart of a family and their traditions. It’s an experience that I know will stay with us for years to come, and I can’t wait to share it with other families looking for a truly authentic adventure.
