Highlights
  • Tokuju-ji Temple - The temple was established around 300 years ago. The main Buddha, known as “Kinseki Jizo,” is believed to offer protection for children and during pregnancy. There is an old story about an elderly couple who prayed to Jizo for a child and were blessed with a healthy boy. In gratitude, they built the temple. The temple is part of the Soto-syu sect. In Miyajima, all temples are somewhat affiliated with the Itsukushima Shrine, so you may notice elements typically associated with Shinto shrines.

Additional Information

Experience a Japanese cultural lesson in a 300-year-old temple in Miyajima. Our location is just a 5-minute walk from the ferry port, yet slightly removed from the bustling tourist areas, allowing you to enjoy the serene atmosphere of the temple.

We begin the lessons by dressing you in a kimono.

The tea ceremony is led by our tea master in an authentic tea room. We will guide you through the ceremony so you understand each step. Savor sweet treats and matcha tea with proper etiquette. After the tea ceremony, you will have the opportunity to make your own tea.

Calligraphy was introduced to Japan from China in the 6th century. Learn to draw lines with a brush. Carefully observe the sample to replicate the Chinese character. Write your letter and name on a rice scoop. The rice scoop (shamoji) is considered a lucky item in Miyajima.

Create a unique amulet just for you. Choose an amulet case and string that you like. Write or stamp your wish on a mini rice scoop. Assemble everything to complete your amulet.

Kimono, tea ceremony and calligraphy - A great experience of different Japanese traditions: first we were allowed to wear a kimono (this can go relatively long for women), then we enjoyed a tea ceremony and learned a little calligraphy (not even so easy). Everyone was super friendly and patient, we felt very welcome! There were also many pictures taken of us in the kimono and at the tea ceremony. Overall, the course is not quite cheap, but you get a lot for the money!

A lovely time - I went to Okeiko on a whim for a calligraphy and I really enjoyed my brief time learning the strokes. I got some souvenirs. I would like to thank the teacher for her patience and small talk

Best day in Miyajima! - Our day at Okeiko was wonderful. The entire experience from beginning to the end was amazing. The team were extremely welcoming and kind and made us feel really comfortable. They guided through every step of each activity and shared their beautiful culture. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. Would definitely do it again. Such a beautiful way to discover traditional Japanese culture. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Cultural experience - The area was quiet and untouristy, which was a little experience in itself. There was a wide selection of beautiful kimonos. There was plenty of time to take photos together in the garden. The organizers also took lots of photos during the whole event and made them available to us at the end. The tea ceremony and calligraphy were very interesting, there was a lot of information about it, the hosts spoke good English. The amulet and the wish that went with it rounded off the experience nicely. It was also nice that we got souvenirs to take home (our own calligraphy and the amulet). Definitely recommended for anyone who wants to experience Japanese culture!

I'm glad to have you - It was a great experience. They helped me a lot. All three ladies were sweet, friendly, knowledgeable and charismatic. They showed great patience in choosing the kimono. Amulet and calligraphy touched me deeply. It was very instructive. The tea ceremony was amazing and the best matcha I have ever had. I'm glad I learned. Both chocolate and confetti were very nice. I want to visit again with my child and wife in the future. Greetings from Turkey. Thank you for everything. It was the best morning of my life.

Amazing - Very interesting and fun activities! I especially loved wearing kimono and getting amazing photos taken commemorating the occasion. It was interesting to learn what goes into making an amulet.

Highly recommended - It was a great experience! My partner and I really wanted to dress in kimono and do the tea ceremony, but then we saw the expanded pack with calligraphy and making amulets and we thought it was very curious. We were practicing Kanjis and we took a wooden spoon that we decorated. We also made an amulet, which I was very curious about because of all the temples we had visited, what they had inside. The staff was super friendly and they are very respectful of people's needs (whether or not you want photos, the height of the chairs, what you need to practice on paper before starting to write on wood, hehe) The photos were great. I recommend the full experience if you've never done it before and like us, you're curious. We enjoyed it a lot! Personally, I will repeat when the kimono tea ceremony comes back!

Simply wonderful - If we could give a thousand stars, we would :) We had soooo much fun. The ladies who guided us were super friendly, both in Jpanese and English. They are professional and kind. The activities we booked (Kimono, amulet, tea ceremony, and calligraphy) were really fun. If you want a taste of Japan in a short time and a beautiful setting, this is something for you!
