Highlights
  • Altstadt Hattingen - There is a lot to experience on this guided tour of the old town of Hattingen: the legendary “Horkenstein” tells of the early settlement of the region around Hattingen. The Synagogue Square is located in front of the historic city wall. The synagogue of the Jewish religious community stood here until 1938. The smallest half-timbered house in Hattingen’s old town stands on a stump of the medieval city fortifications. A dense half-timbered building was once attached to the reformed St. John’s Church, which was destroyed in 1945. The arcade-lined square tells us a lot about medieval shopkeepers and what the city’s wine house has to do with my early contracts. On the Obermarkt, one of the liveliest squares in the area of the historic old town, the Treidelbrunnen commemorates the first economic boom due to the navigability of the Ruhr. The Old Town Hall was built in 1576 above the butchers’ guild hall and tells us about the city’s early economic boom.

Additional Information

Join us for a journey back in time with our 1,111 step tour through the historic Old Town Hall.

Our adventure begins at the iconic Horkenstein and traces the path of the ancient city walls. Following this, we’ll delve deeper into the celebrated landmarks of the charming old town, including the customs house, the iron house, the old town hall, and St. Georg Church. If you wish, we can also visit the town’s most renowned, and arguably the most attractive, half-timbered house outside of regular operating hours - the Iron House in the old town of Hattingen, which also houses the Hattingen / Ruhr local club museum.

As we conclude our city expedition back at the Horkenstein, you’ll have gained insight into ancient fossil formations, Middle Age sanitation, in-town water features, and city redevelopment plans. Experience the delights of timber-constructed architecture with the house fountains, squeaking oak floors, petite doors, and small sash windows when we stop at the 1611 iron house museum!
