- Market Square (Marktplatz) - Until the 19th century, Heidelberg’s market square was the site of public executions and corporal punishments.
- Church of the Holy Ghost (Heiliggeistkirche) - Discover the story behind the pretzels on the church wall.
- Hotel Zum Ritter - Built in 1592 by cloth merchant Carolus (Charles) Belier, who fled Habsburg Valenciennes due to his Protestant faith, this Renaissance building is the only civic structure that survived the great fire of 1693 during the War of the Palatine Succession.
- Mittelbadgasse - Named after a public bath, this street was home to various bathing rooms popular with soldiers, students, monks, and professors, especially during the Thirty Years’ War. Besides beer, food, and bathing, other services were offered.
- Old Bridge (Karl Theodor Bridge) - Constructed in 1788 under Elector Karl Theodore, this Neckar Valley sandstone bridge is the ninth on this site and is now one of Heidelberg’s most iconic landmarks.
- Bruckenaffe - The original bridge monkey sat in the old monkey tower, mockingly greeting strangers. After the tower and figure sank into the Neckar, a new bridge monkey now holds a golden mirror to visitors, welcoming them with a poem. Unlike its predecessors, the Heidelberg (plush) bridge monkey neither grabs its hindquarters nor displays the mano cornuta (Italian for ‘horned hand’).
- Studentenkarzer - Established in 1545, the first Heidelberg Karzer allowed detainees to purchase food and drinks from nearby inns (at their own expense) and provided regular release for longer sentences.
- Universitätsplatz - This area, once known as Paradeplatz or Ludwigsplatz, extends west and south of the Old University and is bordered by the New University. It covers the foundations of the former Augustinian monastery, with Grabengasse illustrating the course of the first city fortification along the western edge.
- Hexenturm - The Witch Tower, the only remaining defensive tower from Heidelberg’s medieval city fortifications, is now located near the New University. Its name reflects the era of witch persecution.
- St. Peter’s Church (Peterskirche) - As Heidelberg’s oldest church, St. Peter’s was built before the city’s probable founding in 1220 or earlier. A document from 1196 mentions St. Peter, marking the first recorded mention of the village of Heidelberg.

Embark on an exciting search for clues through Heidelberg’s old town. We wish you a lot of fun in our journey of discovery on the trail of a profession from times long past.
Since 1996 we have been conducting our guided tours in Heidelberg. It all started with a cemetery tour, the “Gothic Heidelberg” scary tour and a guided tour with the medieval castle guard. Meanwhile, there are dozens of topics and a multitude of night watchmen, commissars, executioners and executioners’ daughters who are in no way inferior to the “pioneers” of those days.
