• Old Bridge (Karl Theodor Bridge) - The journey starts at the Old Bridge, a monumental landmark at the medieval gate leading to the charming town. Spanning the Neckar River, it connects the historic skyline with lush green landscapes, offering numerous fantastic viewpoints. The stonework and beautiful sculptures are part of its rich history: it was destroyed by the German Nazis just days before the end of World War II.
• Heidelberger Altstadt - After passing through the fairytale-like gate, you’ll enter a world of Baroque architecture with a touch of classicism, beginning at Stone Valley Street. Both sides of the narrow cobbled lane are lined with bustling cafes, eateries, and small shops nestled between quaint buildings, creating a cozy and joyful atmosphere.
• Church of the Holy Spirit - At the end of the lively street stands the imposing Church of the Holy Spirit, showcasing Gothic and Baroque architecture. Interestingly, colorful souvenir shops are attached to its niches outside the stately façade, a practice dating back to medieval times.
• Heidelberger Marktplatz - Next, explore the charming Market Square. Beautiful old buildings, including the church and the Town Hall, surround the stunning Hercules Fountain. Today, the central square features many restaurants and cafes with delightful outdoor seating and a lively weekly market, especially the popular Heidelberg Christmas Market. However, centuries ago, public trials were held here where heretics and witches were burned.
• Kornmarkt - A few steps to the south is another beautiful yet quieter square: the Kornmarkt. This lovely square, situated not far from Heidelberg Castle, offers one of the best viewpoints of the majestic castle and stunning backgrounds for souvenir photos.
• Hauptstraße - Next, return to Hauptstraße, the largest pedestrian street and shopping hub of the historic town. Luxury international fashion brands alternate with quaint traditional shops and historic buildings, providing a great opportunity to combine window shopping and sightseeing.
• Heidelberg Old Synagogue Memorial - Head back to the riverfront where the Old Synagogue Memorial tells moving stories about the Jewish community that once thrived in Heidelberg. The memorial square, built on the foundation of the old synagogue burned by the Nazis, features name plaques of the victims and the outline of the synagogue’s walls in white marble.
• Heidelberger Marstall - Pass by the Marstall complex, just a stone’s throw away, one of Heidelberg’s few medieval buildings. The picturesque riverside location of the castle-like building makes it look like a scene from a Disney movie, where the tour gives way to leisurely strolls or relaxing on comfy benches along the atmospheric river.
