He became the patron saint during the Turkish occupation. According to tradition, on Easter 1826, while Christians were attending the Resurrection service, a group of Muslims planned a massacre, which was thwarted by an old cavalry officer. This horseman resembled the Turkish leader Ayan Aga, who calmed the mob and prevented the massacre. Christians believed this mysterious horseman was Saint Minas himself, appearing to the Turks to stop the violence.
