- Kini - In the scenic fishing village of Kini, by the water, stands a fountain featuring a mermaid and a fisherman. The mermaid, known as Panagia Gorgona (meaning “Saint Mermaid” or “Virgin Mary the Mermaid”), is the patroness of fishermen. This sculpture honors fishermen who have been lost at sea.
- Episkopio - On the slopes of the lush hill of Episkopeio, the first rulers of Syros built their holiday villas in the 19th century, making it one of the island’s resorts. At the hill’s summit, the church of Prophet Elias offers endless views, but the most renowned church in Episkopeio is Panagia Piskpoiani or Protothroni, constructed in 1624.
Episkopeio was the initial seat of the Metropolis of Syros, housing the Bishop’s residence, which gave the village its name. Today, only the ruins of this 15th-century building remain.
Within the village’s boundaries lies the “red house,” a painted red house that fuels one of Syros’ most famous legends. It is said to have inspired Manolis Karagatsis to write the novel “The Great Chimera,” which tells its story. The bold of Episkopeio claim that approaching the red house, one can hear the tears, screams, and laughter of its residents.

Hermoupolis - The port town of Syros is marked by the grandeur of the Town Hall, indicating it as the administrative capital of Greece’s renowned island chain. However, the neoclassical architecture, multi-colored mansions, and cosmopolitan atmosphere differ from the typical whitewashed Cycladic islands.
Visitors can explore the largest town hall in Europe, Ermoupolis Town Hall, the first theater in Greece, Theatro Apollon, the Church of the Dormition (which houses the authentic image of the Dormition of the Virgin from 1562 by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, also known as El Greco), and the famous Vaporia, the old ship-owners’ quarter with neoclassical mansions, palm trees, and magnificent terraces that once hosted elegant evening parties and receptions. -
Ano Siros - As the ultimate fortress town, Ano Syros invites exploration of Cycladic architecture and Venetian charm. The narrow, winding streets, whitewashed and colorful houses tightly packed together, and the amphitheatrically shaped settlement offer extraordinary views of the South Aegean. Ano Syros was once a fortress town with gates that protected residents from pirate raids, offering magical views of the South Aegean.
Strolling through the cobblestone streets of Upper Syros (as the name translates) reveals the medieval and Catholic character introduced by the Venetians in the 13th century, within a Cycladic setting. The Catholic Cathedral of San Georgio still dominates the town’s highest point.
