Highlights
  • Hólmsá - We drive down alongside the river Hólmsá on our way to Suðurfjörur.
  • Sudhurfjorur - Suðurfjörur is about 400-500 meters wide and 12 km long sand spit that projects out between the Atlantic ocean and Hornafjörður. On the ocean side there is a black sand beach where the roaring ocean beats the sand and rocks. On the other side is a mixture of small sand hills with Lyme grass and small ponds with a vivid birdlife.

Suðurfjörur are known for their diverse birdlife. There is also a lot of flotsam and debris that has travelled a long way with the ocean.

This sand beach is a magnificent and magical place and you always see something new, each time you drive out there.

  • Sudhurfjorur - Explore historical ruins, stroll along black sand beaches, and take in the breathtaking Hvanneyjarviti lighthouse. Admire one of Höfn Harbor’s most difficult entrances in Iceland, where curious seals frequently watch while you enjoy the breath-taking vistas of the mountains.
  • Heinabergsjokull - We cross an old bridge on our way back. It was probably a big bridge when it was built. But now our Super Jeep barely fits on it.
  • Heinabergslón - The trip continues to a fascinating glacial lagoon under Heinabergsjökull or Fláajökull. On the walk to the lagoon, you’ll come across a sizable herd of reindeer, which will add some wildlife to this amazing experience.
