Historically, Hoi An served as an international trading port for the Champa Kingdom, facilitating the import and export of wood, gold, and silk. During its peak, Hoi An hosted trade fairs that attracted merchants from Holland, Portugal, Japan, and China. However, as the river became too shallow, Da Nang was chosen to replace Hoi An as the major port.
