We had to try something not available to us at home (Australia) - To begin our tour, we were picked up from our hotel by our guide and guide-in-training and taken to a local lantern-making facility not far from Hoi An’s Old Town where we were shown the lantern-making process and then helped to make our own small lantern. (Had we known better we’d also have purchased pre-made lanterns here too.) We were then driven back to the old town where we were taken on a walking tour of some of the local places of interest - the local market, a local house that floods every year, a Chinese temple and were even taken to see a short local play. Our guide was very strict with his time management, and while I found this to be quite funny, he was informative and we did enjoy the experience. A lovely way to spend our first morning in Hoi An.
