Hoi An Walking Tour - I really recommend this half day tour in Hoi An. Our guide Mr Thai was very kind and helpful, and explained the history and culture of this city to us. Visiting the ancient part with a guide allows you to better understand many aspects related to history and religion. We also saw the lanterns, tasted the famous MÓT tea and ate a truly excellent local lunch.

Old Town and more - A very informative tour with Kim this afternoon around the old town. Sharing her knowledge and answering our questions. Enjoyed a lovely meal at Little Kitchen House down a side street. Would certainly recommend this tour.

Nice during the day as motor bikes are restricted (on entry). - Hoi An’s Old Town is divided into two sections on either side of a stream going into the river (Japinees on one side and Chinees culture on the other side). on the walking tour, we came across one of the towns well-known features of the Japanese-covered bridge, complete with its temple and statuary BUT the structure is TOTALLY under overhaul reconstruction. As we walked through Hoi An’s historic streets we observed the city’s mossy houses, including the Phuc Kien Congressional House (a must see). Most of Hoi An’s historic houses have been maintained in their traditional design, with brick exteriors and wooden interiors. After many centuries of maritime trade, the town boasts a multicultural atmosphere, as many traders from Persia, Arabia, China, Japan, and India, as well as the first Christian missionaries to reach Vietnam, have all left their mark. We stopped to tour the “OLD HOUSE”, which in its day was owned by a wealthy merchant. Out the back door of the two-level home there are doors that open to the river for receiving shipments. One very interesting feature for Tom was the roof tiles. The tiles have horizontal slots in them to promote ventilation while being set at 30 degrees to let the rainwater to run off to a drinking water cistern. The wood used in the house construction is Iron and Teak wood. Both woods, to improve their longevity are first totally submerged in water for up to 10 years. No nails are used anywhere in the structure. Houses (ancient structures) cannot be modified from historic design = These are all classified as world heritage structures) and can sell for $3 million or rent for $3,000 a month. During last year’s monsoon rains of November Hoi An streets were flooded with 3 ft of water, so the OAT tour had to hire boats to move travelers into / around / out of town. A week later after we left Hoi An our tour guide notified us the city flooded as the monsoons had started

Hoi An is worth exploring! - During the tour you learn a lot about the history of the city. I particularly liked the large hall. After the tour and the meal, Kim even took the time to go to the river and look at the lantern boats with us. Afterwards we even played the local bingo! Kim puts a lot of effort into it and it is absolutely worth getting to know Hoi An better this way.
