Chien Dan Cham Tower - Tháp Chiên Đàn Cham Towers are situated in one of the early core regions of Vietnam’s indigenous Cham culture, centered around the citadels of Indrapura and Simapura (modern Trà Kiệu and Đồng Dương, respectively). Similar to other early Indianized kingdoms of Southeast Asia that thrived on trade between India and China, the Cham maritime trading culture expanded their influence along Vietnam’s coastal routes. The ruined towers are located on the flat coastal plain about 5 km from the ocean. Their modern name “Chiên Đàn” is the Vietnamese transliteration of the Sanskrit word “chandan”, meaning “aloe wood.”

The only tour you need!!! - My wife booked us this tour on spec and it turned out to be the most special day you could ever possibly imagine. We were very lucky to have Cham Cham himself as our guide and what a bonus that was! He is incredibly knowledgeable and was happy to share plenty of interesting historical and cultural facts with us throughout the whole tour (#tip; it was 10 hours start to finish so allow yourself a full day to experience everything on offer). Cham provided helpful background context on the way to My Lai which made the experience even more poignant, especially when we got to see the sole living survivor of the massacre who happened to be in the museum filming an interview when we arrived. After walking around the village we were treated to a delicious lunch at a very traditional family run restaurant in a nearby hamlet. Next stop was the tunnels at Ky Anh where the wonderful ex-VC soldier Mr Tho (?) gave us an overview of the tunnel system and how the VC conducted guerrilla warfare against GI Joe from right under their noses. As mentioned elsewhere, he was one of the actual tunnel diggers and still knows his way around the whole 32km underground system! You definitely need to go with Cham as we were peppering Mr Tho with questions which would not have been possible without Cham Cham there to translate for us. As if all this was not enough, on the way home we were taken to the Champa temple towers at Chien Dan which are a wonder to behold. Literally, on the side of the road in someone's backyard are 3 of the most well-preserved examples of these beautiful and functionally important works of art you will find...so much better than My Son and not a tourist bus in sight!! Once again Cham Cham's history degree came in handy as he explained so much more about the Champa people's culture, religious ceremonies and construction methods than we had heard on the My Son tour, and he had even arranged for the adjacent museum full of treasures from the site to be opened up especially for us. So....in summary, if you are thinking of doing a tour from Hoi An then this is the only one you need. Definitely "off the beaten track", there were no other tourists at any of the places Cham Cham took us to, we got to see so much and his connections and local knowledge made the day truly wonderful, it was like a hands-on history lesson. Must also mention our driver who got us there and back safely and navigated the hectic traffic expertly. Do yourself a favour and book in now!

Incredible off the beaten track tour - If I could give this tour 10 stars I would. This was an amazing unique authentic experience for anyone who wants to dive deeper into Vietnamese history both modern and ancient. A full day tour with 3 different stops - My Lai so poignant and troubling but our wonderful guide Cham Cham took us through it very carefully, as well us giving us the space to absorb everything in our own time. The most delicious local lunch at a place we perhaps would never have gone was a special highlight. This was followed by the incredible Ky Anh tunnels and meeting Mr To - a VC veteran who had helped buid the tunnels as a 17 year old. So many fascinating stories. It was a privilege to meet this man and talk to him as well as the opportunity to actually go into the tunnels and walk around the village. Finally the Champ temple ruins close by. Anyone with the slightest interest in archeology would be stunned by these ruins and the little museum. I strongly suggest skipping My Son and doing this instead (as an archeological student and someone who had been to both now) Finally we learnt so much, during the drive, about Vietnamese culture and society just talking to Cham Cham and observing the countryside. This tour really bought history and modern life alive for us and is for anyone seeking alot more depth than average basic tourist tour. We also could not believe we were the only people at each location- so special and incredible value. Thank you Cham Cham!! (and Mr So Safe Driver!!!) Wonderful.

Just the best experience - A journey that I knew would be difficult, not an easy place to take a tourist? Vincent and our driver Cong were amazing. From well presented guidance, safe and professional driving they took us on an incredible journey into Vietnams past.

We had a fabulous enlightening time - We were picked up promptly by Vincent an enthusiastic guide with excellent English, and a superb driver cong who drove amazingly through busy traffic in rainy conditions, the car was comfortable and clean Our trip to the my lai massacre was haunting but very interesting, Vincent was very eloquent and gave us in-depth information. We stopped at a little restaurant along the way and had a very tasty lunch served with the local tea , everyone was very friendly and the meal was delicious, we then visited the Ky Anh tunnels where we met Ta , who now in his late sixties had been a young boy of seventeen who had witnessed the war and had helped build the tunnels , I apprehensively entered the tunnels as I’m not too good with enclosed spaces but managed to experience the underground life they lived through. Ta was amazing and enlightening us immensely Last of all we visited the chien Dan Towers where again Vincent explained the history from a 1000 years ago , he took lots of photos for us and had great knowledge of the history We really enjoyed our tour and would highly recommend it to anyone, thanks again we appreciate all the hard work you put in to it

Brilliant day out learning about parts of the Vietnam war - Just did this trip with Hoi An Cham Cham travel and if you have any interest in the Vietnam war then this is a great trip Henry, my guide was waiting for me in my hotel at the pick up time and we had a comfortable new car for the long drive to My Lai. The driver drove carefully and I felt safe with him at the wheel, the only minor issue was he wasn't familiar with the route and took a few wrong turns. Henry is a very knowledgeable guide and you can tell he enjoys his job and his English is reasonable. As for the trip itself it's about 2 1/4 hours from Hoi An to My Lai while the Ky Anh tunnels are about half way between the two. I found My Lai both fascinating and sad. Unlike the war museum in Saigon there's no propaganda mixed in with the story telling and indeed there's a section telling how an American pilot rescued 5 villagers from execution ( one now lives in Canada) Nevertheless it is a very dark day for the USA, particularly when you realise how many of the 506 massacred civilians were under 10. Make sure you see the 30 minutes documentary they can show you which also is not a local propaganda piece of material Equally fascinating was Ky Anh. You pretty well will have the place to yourself and if you're lucky like I was you will get Mr Thom as your guide. He actually helped make the tunnels back in the late 60s! There is no lighting in the section you can still go along so it feels very authentic. Be aware there were a bit of water up to maybe 2cm deep along the way. He will then show you the entrances to others parts of the 32Km built with just chisels and hammers and also explain the warning system used when the American army was approaching. Finally we stopped at Chien Dan Cham which is a 10th century Buddhist shrine from the Cham kingdom. It's not in that great a state and was ok without being spectacular. All in all it was a brilliant day out and if you have any interest in the war then definitely do this tour

Heartbreaking stories but enriching experience. - An eye-opening and profound experience. To stand in the ruins of the My Lai village that was massacred in 1968 is a sombre moment. Our guide Ken was absolutely incredible; as someone who lived through this horrific period, his knowledge of the war but also his own life story adds to the compelling nature of the tour.
