- Athens National Garden - The Royal Garden, established by Queen Amalia of Oldenburg, the first queen of independent Greece and wife of King Otto, spans 15.5 hectares in the heart of Athens, near the Greek Parliament.
The Royal Garden’s creation took place from 1838 to 1840, guided by the German gardener Schmidt. To bring the vision to life, over 500 species of plants, along with various animals and birds, were introduced.
The park is designed as a series of themed compositions, featuring not only exotic plants but also ancient ruins and mosaics. Visitors can enjoy a small zoo and several ponds with large goldfish. There are picnic tables and a spacious children’s playground.

The National (or Royal) Garden is a luxurious park in the center of Athens, covering an area of 15.5 hectares. The gardens were planted for Queen Amalia back in 1839.
The garden practically surrounds the Parliament building. By the way, the changing of the guard takes place near the institution every hour - a spectacle worth watching. There are more than 15,000 species of plants on the territory of the national garden. The park is very well-kept, it has a living corner with geese, peacocks and goats.
There are also several ponds with huge fish and turtles. There is a playground for children. You can have a snack in the park cafe or just on a bench in the shade of the trees, or even on the lawn.
