Review (2024-12-25): Great Country wonderful trip - We had a wonderful trip to the Scottish Highlands, many thanks to our driver and guide Keith. Lovely highland cows, deers, and sheep gave wonderful images. Loch Ness was very mysterious.
Discovering the Legends of Loch Ness
No trip to the Highlands would be complete without a visit to the legendary Loch Ness. The Urquhart Castle & Inverness Exploration offers a private full-day tour that delves into the history and folklore of this iconic location. Available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on January 4th and 5th, this tour takes you along the shores of the Cromarty Firth and across the Black Isle to Beauly Priory, a 13th-century monastery with connections to the Outlander series.
As you continue your journey, you’ll visit Urquhart Castle, perched on a promontory jutting into Loch Ness. The views from here are nothing short of spectacular, and it’s easy to see why this spot is steeped in legend. Keep an eye out for Nessie as you explore the castle ruins and walk down to the water’s edge. The tour also includes stops at the Clava Cairns, a 4000-year-old Bronze Age cemetery, and the Culloden Battlefield, where you can learn about the last battle fought on British soil.
Review (2024-12-06): Wonderful Day Tour - Having a guide who is a local of the Highlands is key! Billy was a great guide and was very accommodating for our day. We started our day with a tour of Inverness then onto Loch Ness. We stopped at the ruins of Urquhart Castle, then went to Beauly and were introduced to a dream ring and coffee before going to Robertson’s Farm to meet Jamie McKenzie Fraser and Katie Moran, the highland cows (they were the highlight of the tour, according to my wife).
Indoor Escapes and Cultural Delights
While the weather may be foggy and damp, the Highlands offer plenty of indoor activities to keep you entertained. Inverness, the cultural capital of the Highlands, is home to a wealth of museums and historical sites that are perfect for families. Explore the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, where you can learn about the region’s history and culture through interactive exhibits and displays. The museum’s family-friendly approach ensures that both kids and parents will find something to enjoy.
For a taste of local culture, visit Leakey’s Second-hand Bookshop, one of the oldest streets in Inverness. This charming bookshop is housed in a former church and offers a cozy retreat from the cold. Browse through its extensive collection of books, or simply relax with a cup of coffee by the wood-burning stove. As you wander through the city, you’ll also come across the Old High Church and Inverness Castle, both of which offer a glimpse into the area’s rich history.
Whether you’re exploring the foggy landscapes of the Highlands or delving into its cultural treasures, this winter escape promises to be an unforgettable experience. Embrace the mystique of the Highlands and discover the magic that lies within its misty embrace.
