- Great Glen Distillery - Located in the village of Drumnadrochit on the shores of Loch Ness, famously known as the home of the Loch Ness Monster. Drumnadrochit is brimming with novelty shops offering Scottish clan items and other traditional Scottish goods. Visitors can also explore the Great Glen Gin Distillery, Scotland’s smallest distillery, where they can enjoy complimentary tastings of award-winning gin crafted from the waters of Loch Ness, providing a genuine taste of Nessie.
- Culloden Battlefield - The Battle of Culloden occurred on 16 April 1746, near Inverness. A Jacobite army led by Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force under the Duke of Cumberland, concluding the Jacobite rising of 1745. Culloden marks the site of the last major battle on British soil, where 1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers fought and perished. Today, visitors can walk along the battle lines and view the soldiers’ graves beside the memorial cairn at the center of the battlefield.
- Culloden Viaduct - Designed by Murdoch Paterson, Chief Engineer of the Highland Railway, this bridge was constructed between 1893 and 1898 and remains in use today. The curved stone structure with concrete foundations spans 1800 feet, making it the longest masonry railway viaduct in Scotland. It features 29 arches, including a wider central arch over the river, with 14 on each side. Built using local red sandstone from the Leanach Quarry on Culloden Moor, it is a site of special architectural interest.
- Clava Cairns - The Clava Cairn is a type of Bronze-age circular chamber tomb cairn, named after the group of three cairns at Balnuaran of Clava. They are divided into two sub-types: one typically features a corbelled passage grave with a single burial chamber connected to the entrance by a short passage and covered with a cairn of stones, with entrances oriented southwest towards the midwinter sunset. The other sub-type is an annular ring cairn enclosing an apparently unroofed area with no formal access from the outside. The Clava Cairns inspired the fictional Craigh na Dun standing stones in the book and TV series Outlander, where the famous “Cleft stone” that transports the main character Claire back in time can be found.
- Cawdor Castle - Cawdor Castle, located in the parish of Cawdor, is built around a 15th-century tower house with significant additions in later centuries. Originally owned by the Calder family, it passed to the Campbells in the 16th century and is still owned by the Campbells today, serving as the home of the Dowager Countess Cawdor. The earliest documented date for the castle is 1454, when a license to fortify was granted to William Calder, 6th Thane of Cawdor. However, some parts of the 15th-century tower house or keep may predate that date. Architectural historians have dated the stonework style in the oldest portion of the castle to approximately 1380. Along with its beautiful gardens, it is a must-see and a popular stop for visitors.
