- Urquhart Castle - In OUTLANDER, Chapter 19: The Waterhorse, Claire visits the shore of Loch Ness to wash up before supper. There, she encounters a mysterious creature in the water, sensing it is from another time like her. This encounter with the possibly prehistoric creature does not frighten her.
Urquhart was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces and later fell into decay. In the 20th century, it was designated a scheduled monument and opened to the public. Today, it is one of Scotland’s most-visited castles.
