- Cawdor Castle - Upon entering these historic walls, visitors embark on a captivating audio journey through the castle’s rich history, dating back to at least 1454. Each room echoes with the past — from the 16th-century portrait gallery’s elegance in the drawing room to the 17th-century Flemish tapestries’ warmth and opulence in a bedroom once suited for nobility. Fine art, antique treasures, and their stories await at every corner, inviting guests to linger a bit longer.
After the tour, guests can leisurely explore the diverse gardens. There are also two gift shops and a café on-site. For WOW guests, the café provides a convenient packed or boxed lunch option, recommended for those who wish to take something for later in the day. Entrance and an audio guide to Cawdor Castle are included in the tour price.
- Culloden Battlefield - The next stop is Culloden Battlefield, one of the UK’s most significant battlefields. Here, the guide brings the landscape to life during a 30-minute walking tour, captivating visitors with the tale of the last pitched battle on British soil; the Jacobite uprising of 1746. Standing on the windswept moor, it’s easy to imagine the courage, sacrifice, and heartbreak that occurred here, with echoes of the past lingering in the stillness. The haunting beauty of the landscape, combined with its tragic history, creates a deeply moving experience that remains with visitors long after they leave.
- Clava Cairns - Clava Cairns is an exceptionally well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery, constructed around 4,000 years ago. Scattered across the site are fascinating structures – passage graves, ring cairns, a kerb cairn, and atmospheric standing stones. While the history alone makes this a captivating stop, it’s also a must-see for Outlander fans. Diana Gabaldon has described Clava Cairns as the “spiritual home of Craigh na Dun,” and many visitors say it feels like stepping straight into the world of Claire and Jamie.
- Loch Ness - The next stop is the stunning Dores Beach, on the serene south shores of Loch Ness — offering one of the most breathtaking views in the UK! Visitors can stroll along the pebbled shore and soak up the stunning panorama or, if he’s not off on a Nessie-hunting mission, they might even meet resident monster hunter Steve Feltham, who has been searching for the Loch Ness Monster here for over 30 years and sells some very memorable souvenirs. There’s also a traditional Scottish pub right on the loch’s edge, where guests may wish to enjoy a local beer or a wee dram of whisky (subject to opening hours).
- Inverness - With its intriguing history, scenic setting on the River Ness, and abundance of cozy pubs and quirky shops, Inverness has a charm all its own. Known as the capital of the Highlands, it offers a delightful mix of heritage and vibrancy. In just a short stroll, visitors can admire the red sandstone Inverness Castle, take in the beauty of St Andrew’s Cathedral, and wander through the characterful Victorian Market — all while soaking up the lively atmosphere of this welcoming Highland city.
Guests will have around one hour to explore here, with slightly less time on tours lasting under eight hours.
- Scottish Highlands - The tour will be on the lookout for one of the Highlands’ most famous residents — the Highland cow (or “coo” as they like to say). If any of these shaggy, horned beauties are spotted along the way, the tour will do its best to pull over somewhere safe so guests can take photos and enjoy a closer look. Coo sightings are never guaranteed, but these local celebrities are very popular among guests!
To conclude, the tour will travel back to Invergordon via the beautiful Black Isle, a peaceful stretch of rolling countryside dotted with small villages and farmland. Guests will be returned to the port with ample time to spare before their ship departs — usually at least 1 hour 15 minutes ahead. After a day filled with stunning scenery, local stories, and Highland character, guests will return with plenty of great photos and a true sense of this special part of Scotland.
