Our initial stop is at the Wellington lay-by, where on December 31, 1939, a Wellington Bomber from RAF Lossiemouth had to make an emergency landing due to engine failure. The bomber’s remains were recovered in 1985, fully restored, and are now displayed at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge, Surrey.
- Urquhart Castle - Continuing through Drumnadrochit, we arrive at Urquhart Castle, perched on a rocky promontory with stunning views over Loch Ness. This 800-year-old castle has a tumultuous and bloody history. Explore the ruins and the visitor center.
- Beauly Priory - Beauly Priory is currently closed due to recent high winds causing masonry to fall. The reopening date is unknown. However, we will still visit Beauly, where you can view The Priory from the gate.
Leaving Urquhart Castle, we return to Drumnadrochit and take the Culnakirk Hill Road towards Beauly, our next stop, Beauly Priory. Founded in the 13th century for monks of the Valliscaulian order, the priory grounds feature the Beauly Elm Tree, which is 800 years old and the oldest elm tree in Europe.
- Cawdor Castle - Cawdor Castle reopens on April 27, 2024. Since 1370, Cawdor Castle has been home to the Thanes of Cawdor. The castle is set in beautiful grounds and gardens, surrounded by the magnificent Cawdor Big Wood, one of Europe’s finest woodland areas.
- Clava Cairns - We head back towards Inverness to visit the Clava Cairns, a 4000-year-old ancient cemetery. The site includes various prehistoric burial monuments and the remains of a medieval chapel.
The Clava Cairns inspired Creag Na Dun in the Outlander series, and the Cleft Stone can be found here.
- Culloden Battlefield - Less than a mile from Clava Cairns is Culloden Battlefield, where the last battle on British soil was fought on April 16, 1746, marking the end of the final Jacobite Rising. In less than an hour, 1600 men were killed, 1500 of them Jacobites, forever altering Highland life.
Walk around the battlefield to see the memorial cairn and clan burial stones, and visit the visitor center.
- Inverness Castle - We pass by Inverness Castle, where you will see a statue of Flora Macdonald, famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after the Battle of Culloden, in the castle grounds.
- Inverness Cathedral - Inverness Cathedral is the northernmost Anglican Cathedral in the UK. Commissioned by Bishop Eden, it was completed in 1866.
