Catching Waves and Chasing Dreams at Hikkaduwa’s Hippie Surf School
Drawn by the promise of custom surf lessons, I ventured to Hikkaduwa’s Hippie Surf School. With the sun on my back and waves at my feet, I discovered a surf haven that reignited my passion for the ocean.
Arrival in Hikkaduwa
The moment I set foot in Hikkaduwa, I felt the familiar embrace of a beach town that knows how to live in harmony with the ocean. The sun was shining, the waves were calling, and the vibe was unmistakably laid-back. As someone who has spent years chasing waves across Central America, I was eager to see what Sri Lanka had to offer. My wife and I, both seasoned adventurers, were ready to dive into the surf culture here.
Hikkaduwa is a place where time seems to slow down, and the rhythm of the waves dictates the pace of life. The town is dotted with colorful beach shacks, surf shops, and cafes that serve up fresh seafood and tropical smoothies. It’s the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, and that’s exactly what we were looking for.
The Hippie Surf School Experience
Our adventure began at the Hippie Surf School, a place that promised to take our surfing skills to the next level. The school is known for its custom surf packages, tailored to suit the needs of every surfer, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro. We opted for a 5-day package, eager to explore the sandy bottom beaches and perfect our technique.
The instructors at Hippie Surf School were not only skilled surfers but also passionate teachers. They started each session with a warm-up, emphasizing the importance of preparing our bodies before hitting the waves. The fundamentals of surfing and safety protocols were explained with care, ensuring that we felt confident and secure in the water.
The individual feedback we received was invaluable. Each wave we caught was an opportunity to learn and improve, and the instructors were there every step of the way, offering tips and encouragement. It was a refreshing experience to be in a place where the focus was not just on catching waves but on truly understanding the art of surfing.
Riding the Waves
The waves in Hikkaduwa did not disappoint. With the guidance of our instructors, we found the perfect spots to ride the swells. The feeling of catching a wave and riding it to shore is something that never gets old, no matter how many times you’ve done it before. It’s a moment of pure freedom and joy, a reminder of why we fell in love with surfing in the first place.
As the days went by, we found ourselves more in tune with the ocean and the rhythm of the waves. The sun-kissed days were filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the thrill of surfing. Each evening, we would gather with fellow surfers to share stories and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean, a perfect end to a day spent in the water.
Hikkaduwa and the Hippie Surf School offered us an unforgettable experience, one that reignited our passion for surfing and reminded us of the simple joys of life by the sea. It’s a place that will always hold a special spot in our hearts, and we can’t wait to return to ride those waves once more.
