Udawalawe National Park, the sixth largest wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka, is situated 112 miles (180 km) from Colombo in the south-central part of the island. The park lies just south of the Central Highlands, whose escarpment creates a captivating backdrop. Established in 1972, Udawalawe National Park was created to protect the catchment area of the Udawalawe reservoir, which supplies water for agriculture and hydroelectric power generation. The park covers an area of 30,821 hectares, resembling an African game park.
