Atomic Bomb Dome - This skeleton of a building is all that remains in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on August 6, 1945, and serves as a symbol of both the horrors of atomic war and the hope for world peace.
-
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum - The Peace Memorial Museum is located in a large park which commemorates the explosion of the first atomic bomb. This museum collects and displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of that event, supplemented by exhibits that describe Hiroshima before and after the bombings and others that present the current status of the nuclear age.
-
Hiroshima Castle - Hiroshima Castle has every imaginable feature associated with a medieval fortress: a large moat, massive stone walls, as well as bridges and baileys to boot. The castle was originally built in 1590s following its destruction by the atomic bomb and rebuilt in 1958. The building houses an excellent museum that traces the history of Hiroshima, the history of the castle itself, as well as the architecture and other aspects of Japanese castles.
-
Itsukushima Shrine - This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a famous photogenic shrine on Miyajima Island which buildings and torii gate are built over the water, seemingly floating on the sea. The name “Itsukushima” literally means ‘island of worship’ and from ancient times the island itself was worshipped as a god. It is a sacred island where many sacred deer have lived together with human beings.
-
Shukkei-en Garden - Shukkei-en, “shrunken-scenery garden”, is a good description of this garden. Valleys, mountains and forests are represented in miniature in the garden’s landscapes. The garden mimics a variety of natural formations and scenic views. Feel free to stroll around and just sit and enjoy the scenery.
-
Hiroshima Orizuru Tower - This modern tower is a different way to experience Hiroshima. The Orizuru Tower includes a variety of facilities such as Hiroshima Hills, a roof observation deck where you can overlook the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Park, The Orizuru Square, where a variety of digital attractions can be enjoyed, and souvenir shops. The tower is a work of art and kids will enjoy it too.
