- Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum - Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) stands as a significant landmark in the city. Visitors, even those not specifically seeking it, are likely to come across this expansive park, which spans over 120,000 square meters. The park’s trees, lawns, and pathways offer a stark contrast to the bustling downtown area.
Before the atomic bomb, the current site of the Peace Park was the city’s political and commercial hub. This made it the target for the pilot. Exactly four years after the bombing, it was decided that the area would not be redeveloped but instead dedicated to peace memorial facilities.

- Hiroshima Castle - Hiroshima Castle (広島城, Hiroshimajō), also known as the Carp Castle, exemplifies a castle built on a plain in the heart of a city, unlike those on hills or mountains. Its main keep rises five stories, and the grounds are encircled by a moat. Within the castle’s area, there is a shrine, some ruins, and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense).
Hiroshima evolved as a castle town, with the castle serving as both the physical and economic center. Constructed in 1589 by the influential feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was a vital seat of power in Western Japan. Although it escaped the fate of many castles during the Meiji Restoration, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945, along with the rest of the city.
- Shukkei-en Garden - Shukkeien is a Japanese garden in Hiroshima, recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Historical Parks and a National Scenic Spot. This article highlights the garden’s features, access details, and tips for enjoying it.
- Atomic Bomb Dome - One of the few structures that withstood the devastation, now a symbol of resilience and a UNESCO World Heritage site. As visitors walk through the park, they will encounter poignant monuments like the Peace Flame, which will burn until the world is free of nuclear weapons, and the Children’s Peace Monument, honoring the young victims of the bombing.
- Miyajima - Enter a realm of timeless beauty and serene landscapes at Miyajima Island, where nature, history, and spirituality blend to create an unforgettable experience. Known as the “Island of Gods,” this UNESCO World Heritage site features the iconic Itsukushima Shrine, with its stunning “floating” torii gate—one of Japan’s most picturesque views.
As visitors wander through lush forests, they’ll encounter playful deer roaming freely, majestic temples nestled in the hills, and the awe-inspiring Mount Misen, offering panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Whether exploring ancient shrines, savoring local delicacies like fresh oysters, or simply soaking in the tranquility of the island’s untouched beauty, Miyajima promises a journey filled with wonder.
Ideal for nature enthusiasts, history aficionados, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat, Miyajima Island is a must-visit destination that embodies the essence of Japan’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
