- Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana - Formerly the Majestic Hotel, it is a historic building and cultural center in the capital, one of the largest and best-equipped in Brazil.
The Majestic Hotel thrived in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. During this period, it hosted notable guests from politics, such as former presidents Getúlio Vargas and João Goulart, and from the artistic world, such as Vicente Celestino, Virginia Lane, and Francisco Alves. Due to the “developmentalist” period, the hotel faced competition from new hotels with more modern facilities. The former guests were gradually replaced by “cath” and wrestling fighters, as well as singles, widowers, bohemians, and lonely poets like Mário Quintana, who stayed there from 1968 to 1980, in apartment 217. The House was named in his honor, one of Brazil’s greatest poets, Mário Quintana, born in Alegrete, Rio Grande do Sul, but who adopted Porto Alegre as his city of heart.
