• Wat Mahathat - Built in 1374, Wat Mahathat, or “the temple of the Great Relic,” was a significant temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It housed Buddha relics and was the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism, making it the center of Buddhism in the kingdom. This Royal monastery, located near the palace, was where the King conducted important ceremonies. When the Burmese invaded and largely destroyed Ayutthaya in 1767, Wat Mahathat was set ablaze.

One of Thailand’s most photographed objects, the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in tree roots, can be found at Wat Mahathat.

• Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon - Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, or the “Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory,” is notable for its high prang (tower) that dominates the area. Built in the latter half of the 14th century during King U Thong’s reign, it remains an active monastery with resident monks. The monastery acquired its current name in the late 16th century when a large chedi was constructed. In the northeast, a large Reclining Buddha statue wrapped in yellow cloth faces east towards the rising sun. Like many buildings in the area, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon was destroyed during the 1767 invasion. It’s a great place to visit.
• Wat Chaiwatthanaram - One of Ayutthaya’s most impressive ancient temples, Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in Khmer style in 1630 during King Prasat Thong’s reign to honor his mother.

In its prime, Wat Chaiwatthanaram was a significant royal temple where the king and his descendants performed religious rites, and it also served as a cremation site for royalty. The monastery’s structure represents the Buddhist view of the world, with the central prang, about 35 meters tall, symbolizing Mount Meru, surrounded by smaller spires representing continents and oceans, adorned with reliefs depicting Buddha’s life.

Many Buddha images in Ayutthaya, including those at this temple, had their heads removed following the city’s fall to Burmese invaders in 1767. The temple served as an army camp during the Burmese siege but was abandoned when the city fell.

• Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam) - Wat Lokaya Sutha, or Wat Lokayasutharam, known as “the temple of the Earth,” is famous for its 42-meter-long and 8-meter-high Reclining Buddha image (“Phra Buddha Sai Yat”), usually draped in orange cloth.

Little is known about this monastery’s history. Located near the Royal Palace, it was likely an important temple. Its founding date is unknown, but the style of the main prang, similar to Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Mahathat, suggests it dates back to the early Ayutthaya period.
