From Waves to Wings: A Surfer’s Birdwatching Adventure in Hojancha
Trading the surfboard for binoculars, I ventured into the lush Monte Alto Reserve in Hojancha, Costa Rica. Join me as I recount a day filled with vibrant bird species, the symphony of the jungle, and a traditional Costa Rican breakfast.
A New Adventure in Hojancha
As a surfer, my life is usually dictated by the rhythm of the ocean, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the pursuit of the perfect wave. But every now and then, I find myself drawn to the land, to the lush green jungles and the vibrant wildlife that call Central America home. This time, my journey took me to the Monte Alto Reserve in Hojancha, Costa Rica, for a birdwatching tour that promised over 200 species of birds.
The morning air was crisp as I set out with a small group, led by a certified naturalist guide whose passion for the wildlife was infectious. The reserve, nestled between 480 and 880 meters above sea level, is a sanctuary for both flora and fauna. As we walked along the trails, the guide pointed out the various species of birds, from the tiny hummingbirds flitting about to the majestic toucans perched high in the trees. It was a different kind of thrill, one that didn’t involve the rush of catching a wave but rather the quiet excitement of spotting a rare bird.
The Magic of Monte Alto
Monte Alto is more than just a birdwatcher’s paradise; it’s a testament to the beauty and diversity of Costa Rica’s natural landscape. The reserve spans 924 hectares of low mountain moist forest, transitioning into a humid forest, and is part of the Nosara Protected Zone. This area not only protects the wildlife but also the vital water resources of the Rio Nosara.
As we ventured deeper into the reserve, we crossed small bridges over winding creeks, watched large blue Morpho butterflies flutter by, and marveled at the industrious leaf-cutting ants. The sounds of the jungle were a symphony of bird calls, rustling leaves, and distant howler monkeys. It was a reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things, a theme that resonates deeply with my own experiences in the ocean.
A Day to Remember
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the chance to see so many different species of birds in their natural habitat. Our guide’s knowledge and enthusiasm made the experience all the more enriching. After a morning of birdwatching, we were treated to a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, prepared by two local women who cooked just for us. It was a simple yet delicious meal, a perfect end to a morning spent immersed in nature.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that while my heart will always belong to the sea, there’s a part of me that is equally captivated by the wonders of the land. The Monte Alto Reserve Birdwatching Tour was a reminder of the beauty that exists beyond the waves, a beauty that is just as thrilling and awe-inspiring. If you ever find yourself in Hojancha, I highly recommend taking the time to explore this incredible reserve. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left the jungle behind.
