Discovering the Ancient Charms of Ninh Binh

Leaving the bustling streets of Hanoi behind, I embarked on a journey to the ancient town of Hoa Lu, a place steeped in history and culture. As the bus meandered through the lush Vietnamese countryside, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. Hoa Lu, once the capital of Vietnam, is home to beautifully preserved temples dedicated to King Dinh and King Le. Walking through these ancient structures, I was transported back in time, imagining the grandeur of a bygone era.

After exploring the temples, I hopped on a bicycle to cycle through the charming village. The gentle breeze and the picturesque scenery made for a perfect afternoon. The locals, with their warm smiles and friendly waves, added to the charm of the place. A delicious buffet lunch awaited us, offering a taste of the local cuisine that was both satisfying and delightful.

The highlight of the day was the boat trip through the Trang An Landscape Complex. As we glided through the serene waters, surrounded by towering limestone mountains, I understood why this place is often referred to as “Halong Bay on Land.” The hidden caves and lush valleys were a sight to behold, and I felt a deep sense of peace and connection with nature.

Cruising the Iconic Ha Long Bay

The next leg of the journey took me to the world-famous Ha Long Bay. Boarding the cruise, I was greeted with a sumptuous Vietnamese lunch as the boat set sail amidst the iconic limestone formations. The beauty of Ha Long Bay is truly unparalleled, and I found myself in awe of the natural wonders that surrounded me.

Exploring Sung Sot Cave was like stepping into another world. The stunning stalactites and stalagmites created a mesmerizing landscape that left me speechless. Later, I had the option to kayak through Luon Cave or relax on the boat, and I chose the latter, soaking in the tranquility of the bay.

Ti Top Island was another highlight, with its pristine white-sand beach and crystal-clear waters. I took a short hike to the island’s summit, where a breathtaking panoramic view of the bay awaited me. As the sun began to set, we enjoyed a delightful sunset party on the cruise, complete with wine, tea, and snacks. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and beauty.

Conquering the Ha Giang Loop

The final part of the adventure was the thrilling Ha Giang Loop motorbike tour. After a restful night at a hostel in Ha Giang, I met my fellow travelers and our guide, who briefed us on the route ahead. Riding through the breathtaking landscapes of Bac Sum Pass, Quan Ba Heaven Gate, and Can Ty Pass was an exhilarating experience.

The journey took us to the Hmong King’s Palace, a place rich in history and culture. Arriving in Dong Van ancient town, we indulged in a delicious dinner before exploring the town’s vibrant night scene. The camaraderie among fellow travelers made the experience even more memorable.

The next day, we tackled the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, where the views were nothing short of spectacular. A boat trip on the Nho Que River through Tu San Canyon was a refreshing break, offering a unique perspective of the landscape. As we wound our way through Sa Li Pass to Lung Ho viewpoint, I was constantly amazed by the natural beauty of Northern Vietnam.

Our journey concluded in Du Gia village, where we enjoyed a final dinner and shared stories and laughter with newfound friends. The Ha Giang Loop was a true adventure, one that challenged and inspired me in equal measure. As I boarded the bus back to Hanoi, I knew that this experience would stay with me forever, a testament to the incredible beauty and culture of Northern Vietnam.
