- Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum - The tour guide and vehicle will collect guests from their hotels to begin exploring Hanoi. This site is the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s most revered leader, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Ho’. His body is preserved in a glass case at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in central Hanoi, despite his wishes. Visiting this site offers a remarkable experience as it is more than just a typical attraction; it is a significant part of history. Construction began in 1973, inspired by Lenin’s mausoleum in Russia, and it opened to the public in 1975. Security is strict, and visitors should dress respectfully (no shorts, sleeveless shirts, or miniskirts) and must leave bags and cameras outside. Uncle Ho’s remains are sent to Russia annually for maintenance, so the mausoleum is usually closed from October onwards.
- Presidential Palace - The Hanoi Presidential Palace, part of the Ho Chi Minh Complex, was originally the Palace of the Governor-General of Indochina. This beautifully restored French-style building, constructed in 1906, is now used for official receptions. Designed by renowned French architect Auguste Henri Vildieu, it was intended to be President Ho Chi Minh’s official residence, but he chose a traditional stilt house instead. The unique yellow three-story building, inspired by French architecture, features 30 rooms surrounded by lush gardens, an orchard, a long boulevard, and a carp pond. Visitors can view it from a short distance but are not allowed inside.
-
Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House - (Optional - tickets cost 40,000 VND or 1 USD and 50 cents)
This is the living and working place of President Ho Chi Minh, one of Vietnam’s most significant political figures. Known as Uncle Ho’s stilt house, it is a must-visit for tourists in Hanoi. The simple design and tranquil atmosphere offer insight into the greatness and simplicity of the man who resided there. - One Pillar Pagoda - Legend has it that the One Pillar Pagoda was built following a dream by the childless emperor, in which the enlightened being Avalokiteshvara presented him with a baby son resting on a lotus flower. Emperor Ly Thai Tong commissioned the pagoda to resemble this lotus flower, a Buddhist symbol of enlightenment. The Emperor remained grateful to the bodhisattva and later to Quan Am, the Goddess of Mercy, after his son’s birth. Inside the temple, a richly gilded statue of Quan Am is the centerpiece of the main altar. Today, the concrete pillar supporting the small wooden pagoda replaces the original, which was destroyed by the departing French. It is unclear how much of the wooden temple is original. A notable feature is a bo tree behind the pagoda, said to be an offshoot of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, gifted from India in 1958.
-
Temple Of Literature - (Optional - tickets cost 70,000 VND or 2 USD and 80 cents)
This site is one of Hanoi’s most scenic tourist attractions. Originally built as a university in 1070 dedicated to Confucius, scholars, and sages, the building is well-preserved and exemplifies traditional Vietnamese architecture. The ancient site features a lake of literature, the Well of Heavenly Clarity, turtle steles, pavilions, courtyards, and passageways once used by royalty. Visiting the Temple of Literature reveals historic buildings from the Ly and Tran dynasties in a revered place that has seen thousands of doctors graduate, now a memorial to education and literature. Initially, the university only accepted aristocrats, the elite, and royal family members before eventually admitting talented ‘commoners’. Successful graduates had their names engraved on stone steles atop stone turtles. -
Vietnam Museum of Ethnology - (Optional - tickets cost 40,000 VND or 1 USD and 50 cents)
This is a “must-see” attraction in Hanoi City. Tourists will be fascinated by the impressive artifacts displayed, such as clothes, tools, and models of rituals, funerals, weddings, etc. Everything is presented as a small glimpse into the life and traditional culture of ancient ethnic people. -
Hoa Lo Prison - (Optional - tickets cost 50,000 VND or 2 USD)
Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi was initially used by French colonists in Indochina for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for U.S. prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. During this period, American POWs referred to it as the “Hanoi Hilton”. The prison was also used to detain Vietnamese dissidents and other political prisoners. It was demolished in the 1990s, but its gatehouse remains as a museum. Built by the French between 1886 and 1889 when Vietnam was part of French Indochina, the prison was called Maison Centrale, or ‘Central House’, a term still used for prisons for dangerous or long-term detainees in France. It was intended to hold Vietnamese prisoners, particularly political prisoners seeking independence, who often faced torture and execution. It became a symbol of colonial exploitation. - Hanoi Opera House - The Hanoi Opera House is located in the French Quarter of Hanoi, Vietnam. Constructed by the French colonial administration between 1901 and 1911, it is one of three opera houses built by the French in Indochina, alongside the Haiphong Opera House and the Municipal Theatre in Ho Chi Minh City. Modeled on the Palais Garnier, the older of Paris’s two opera houses, its main architectural style is Neoclassicism. Although modeled on the Palais Garnier, it is smaller and uses materials suitable for the environment. After the French left, the opera house became a venue for political events and street fighting during the battle for Hanoi. (The house is closed and opens only for special events. Visitors can view the exterior and learn about its history).
- Old Quarter - Around 17:00, the car and driver will return guests to the original pickup location. If guests wish to spend more time in the Old Quarter, they can request to be dropped off there for some personal time. Bid farewell to the tour guide and driver. End of the trip!
