Hoa Lu, situated approximately 2.5 hours or 110km away from Hanoi by bus, lies in vicinity of the city of Ninh Binh. It was the heart of the Dai Co Viet, an ancient Vietnamese Kingdom from the 10th century, during the era of the Dinh and Le dynasties, until the 11th century under the Ly Dynasty. Despite just covering 300 hectares, this small Kingdom was well protected by a citadel and the Yen Ngua limestone hills against any foe. Today, the remnants of this old kingdom are few. However, two important 17th-century temples, built in the style of the 11th century, remain and are generally included in visits to Hoa Lu. These are the Dinh Tien Hoang Temple, also known as King Dinh temple, and Le Hoan Temple, known as King Le Temple.
