Nice ride in countryside, but more shopping than experience. - Very professional driver and great vehicle. Nice guide, spoke English well and had interesting stories. Ceramic village tour showed 1 site. No ceramic class as described, but saw small display of how the ceramics are made. Underwhelming. Opportunity to purchase ceramics, but pricing is quite high. ($400 US quoted for 7 piece tea set) Silk village was a disappointment. Saw small temple which was closed. Saw 1 open site with silk looms running for a few minutes. Nothing else in the village seemed open in a Saturday and both guide and driver seemed lost. No opportunity to see or purchase finished cloth or silk goods. We were then taken for lunch at high rise shopping location in Hanoi west of west lake. Decent lunch included in tour price. US market prices in items we looked at available for sale. For us, poor weather made the drive through countryside less compelling than it could have been. Having virtually every location in silk village closed was a bummer. Tour operator should have known. Tour price ended up being quite steep relative to other opportunities in Vietnam, and overall felt more like an opportunity to shop at overpriced venues than a way to see how things are made.
