Punta Gorda houses around 150 Garifuna families, descendants of African slaves who were brought to Roatán from St. Vincent in 1797 after a failed rebellion resulted in their British-enforced exile.
Move to the island’s southern shore where you’ll board a native cayuco boat for a close-up look at Oak Ridge, the island’s equivalent to Venice due to the village only being reachable by boat. Sail past Oak Ridge’s vibrant stilted wooden houses, and hear about this naval-village once populated by pirates, now houses family-run fishing businesses which stand as the island’s second major industry. Your escorted cayuco trip will then proceed through the imposing mangrove tunnels en route to the nearby Jonesville. Your tour concludes at the Hole in the Wall restaurant, a favorite local hangout and marine stopover that draws out your swashbuckling character.
