Top notch tour - Amazing experience! Saw more whales, sea lions, bald eagles, and sea otters than I can count. In addition to seeing the more common humpback whales we saw several orca whales. We learned an incredible amount about the wildlife in the area. The bonus drone footage is incredible. It provides an entirely different view of the magnificent creatures.

Our FAVORITE DAY in Alaska!!! - Hard to fully describe this incredible experience, but to summarize: hands down, our favorite experience in Alaska! We were lucky to spend time with a group of at least a dozen orca. Not only does Captain Josh have a drone, he also captured them going under our boat with a go-pro. We moved on to a large group of 16 humpbacks bubble net feeding- Ruffles the whale in the lead. With 6 yo, I was worried she might be bored, but it was exciting from start to finish - we could have happily spent all day out there! Captain Josh and his 1st mate were amazing from start to finish - knowledgeable and sensitive to their environment. This was our first whale watching tour ever and they set bar very high. Jump on this amazing opportunity!

Book this tour - Trip was amazing, captain josh took us straight to the whales, drone footage was amazing. Saw everything we wanted. Much better than cruise excursions, and you could walk to downtown hoonah and then take the shuttle bus back to icy strait, perfect for our group.

The drone footage is amazing. - This whale watching tour is amazing. Josh is the owner/guide, with his wife, were amazing very knowledgable. The made the trip fun and exciting. We only had 5 of us on the boat. The pickup and drop off at the cruise port was on-time and simple. The drone footage alone is worth the cost of the tour. You just don't get that perspective any other way. We also had a problem with our free thumb drive once we got home and Josh sent me a new one the next day. We highly recommend this tour and will schedule it again the next time we are in Alaska.

A breathtaking experience from start to finish! - This was certainly a top highlight of our family’s Alaskan adventure. Not only did we see amazing wildlife - humpbacks, an orca, sea otters, sea lions and eagles - we had the most amazing captain and guide with Josh and Andrew. They both knew so much about the land and animals answering all of our questions. And the drone footage was incredible - it far exceeded expectations and captured a whole other perspective of the beauty of the animals and the land. Icy Straight doesn’t have as many excursions as other ports and is a bit more touristy so whale watching here would be my suggested activity here over other ports. Skip the giant whale watching tours from the cruise where you’re packed in like sardines and support a local business with people who are passionate about what they do and enjoy an almost private experience. You won’t regret it!

Best excursion!!! - This was the best excursion that we did on our cruise. Josh was the best, you can tell he loves what he does. We saw so many whales and the drone footage is fantastic. Was definitely worth the money. Would book another trip with Josh. You will not regret booking the tour.

WHALES! OTTERS! SEA LIONS!! EAGLES! MORE WHALES!! - Alaska Whale Watching and Drone is not your ordinary whale tour. Capt. Josh, his wife Jess, and drone pilot Andrew worked together to give us a wonderful tour of the area around Icy Strait with incredible intuition and insight to the whales’ behavior. One detail we liked was the appropriate distances kept from the wildlife at all time including flying the drone higher than what is required. Great respect of the animals was adhered to. These people love these animals, working with researchers, studying whales in other parts of the world, and even filming never before seen behaviors (ask them about Veggie whale!) It would take days to tell everything we saw, but to say the whales put on a show, exhibiting so many behaviors, is an understatement. We saw more than a dozen breaches and many other behaviors, tail waving, fin slaps, etc. Encountering whales several times during the hours long tour. Each tail view allowed our crew to identify which whales we were seeing and which whale was leading them along. In between whale encounters, the tour went up to a kelp bed where about 50 sea otters and their pups keenly watched as we passed slowly by them. Allowing outstanding views and photo opportunity. Then we went on to a bell bouy where sea lions were in a bit of a game of king of the hill. A GoPro camera on a stick was deployed as some of the sea lions swam around the boat, adding underwater views to the USB drive we would all receive. Footage that was being taken during the trip was quickly displayed on a laptop so we could get different looks. Just book this tour. It’s amazing. Small group, knowledgeable guides, a great experience awaits you.

Captain Josh and Andrew are the Best! - Captain Josh and Andrew were excellent guides and were so personable and knowledgeable about the sea life (whales, sea lions and sea otters). We saw a couple of humpbacks breaching, lots of “tails up”. The drone footage was a fantastic bonus, and we really enjoyed meeting them both. Their boat was just the right size for our group. Thanks Captain Josh and Andrew!

Amazing day on the water in Hoonah - We used Josh & his first mate Andrew for our whale watching experience. It did not disappoint. He was respectful of wildlife and offered us a once in a lifetime experience. Whales, Sitka deer, sea otters, seals, and sea lions were among the highlights. Good communication and clean boat & facilities. The small size was a welcome reprieve from all the tourist trap tours. It felt personal and the drone footage was a real plus. We had a beautiful day to enjoy the boat & tour. Do read the directions carefully because it does take a few steps to arrive at the boat via Hoonah Travel Adventurers shuttle vans. Highly recommend.
