Highlights
  • Hoonah - The first stop is the dock in the village of Hoonah. This is where we keep our commercial crabbing boat and our morning catch of crab. Pick out your fresh crab as we answer any questions you might have about Alaska commercial fishing and crabbing. We fish for pink salmon to use as bait for our commercial crabbing. All the gear is on board so we can give you a demonstration on how it works right at the dock. - Hoonah Beach House - The next stop is the deck over the water at Hoonah Beach House. This is just a quick stop to put our crab on ice for later, and maybe use the restroom if necessary. We will be returning to this location later for the crab feast! - Hoonah - The next stop is some forested private property just outside the village. We occasionally see coastal brown bears here, so have your camera ready. This is where Srisa and I pick the wild Alaska berries you will be enjoying in your dessert at the crab feast. We also have a small garden and orchard. We enjoy talking about what it takes to survive and thrive in our remote location. - Hoonah - Next, it’s back to the village to see our friends at the carving shed. This is your chance to watch local Tlingit master carvers craft totem poles from yellow cedar logs. - Hoonah Beach House - The final stop is the deck at Hoonah Beach House for some fresh crab! The crab we iced down earlier is now ready to be cooked and prepared. Relax and watch as we show you the local way to cook crab. Most people have never tried crab fresh off the boat. Typically, crab shacks serve pre cooked, frozen and re-heated crab. Even the ones that advertise “fresh”. Not us! This is the real deal, and you won’t believe the difference. Most people tell us it’s the best crab they have ever had.

Hoonah Beach and Crab Paradise - My family and I lucked out and got the last crabs of the season from this wonderful restaurant and couple! We all have spoken about our experience at Hoonah Beachouse several times since, and rate it as one of our top experience for this Alaskan trip. The view and food were absolutely divine. Surprisingly fresh crab, in Alaska is rare This crab was certainly fresh and cooked to order for us! It was served with fried rice that was made with love and from fresh vegetables And this amazing dipping sauce. We got to end our dinner with these dessert bars that were made from homegrown rhubarb In the owners garden. I can’t recommend this restaurant and any tour the owners do enough!

Must book this you will not regret it!! - Amazing place!!! 5 Stars!! I highly recommended that you come see what wonderful place, Todd and his wife, Srisa have built, with a lot of love, blood, sweat, & tears, that have transformed through the years into what is known as the, Hoonah Beach House. Help to support a local family bussiness and this is ONE you cannot miss!! You will see the love & hard work put into building this resturtrant from the ground up... Srisa cooks everything from scratch, and most of it they grow them selves, with an influence of Srisa's homeland in Thailand, and her knowledge of fresh herbs, you just cannot miss experiencing her ...special sauce. You will love learning with Todd and taking walks right down to their bay and pick out your crab right their on the beach where Todd will cook them up on the spot just for you. Srisa's picks her own berries and makes a succulant, deliciously special desert, in the end. You can't get anything fresher than this experience. What a lovely time and place for great memories. We will be back. Cynthia L Myers

Best crab around!! - Todd and Serisa's story, what they have created and their gourmet crab fest was outstanding. A very memorable experience and a must do in Icy Straight/Hoonah area. They even offer a rental option which looks to be cozy and comfy!!

Get Your Crab On - We were extremely lucky as my wife and I were the only ones on the tour. Todd picked us up at the meeting point. He was quite personable and since he and Teresa were year round residents, he provide a lot of insight to the town of 850. We drove to the Beach House which they had put a lot of time and effort into rehabilitating. The deck looked on to the water where they set their crab traps and where we witnessed several whales breach the surface of the water.Todd took us to the water and reeled in his bucket of dungeness crabs. Hey picked out two, went upstairs sand put them on ice before steaming them. While we waited, he took us through the town and to their property where he was in the process of building a greenhouse. One the way back to the Beach House we stopped to watch and talk to a master carver who was working on a totem pole for the town. Exquisite workmanship by he and his crew. Back at the Beach House, we were served the crab along with Teresa's jasmine rice and her secret dipping sauce. Excellent meal served with her tea with half & half. When their crab supply is plentiful they accept other guests for lunch, but with their low supply of crab, they turned away a number of people who were looking to eat some crab. The property itself is clean and modern and the hanging flowers add a nice touch. Had a great opportunity to get to know Todd & Teresa and learn a bit about their lives and living in a remote part of Alaska. A day to remember.

An Idyllic Experience - If you are looking for something unique to do and would like to learn how local people live, while eating some delicious crab, then look no further. This was a small tour experience, no more than 18 people. We learned about the local crab industry, how local people live on a daily basis, observed a totem pool being craved and then had a delicious dungeness crab lunch with Todd and Teresa. Todd pulled the fresh crab out of the sea. Then he took us on a tour of Hoonah while his wife Teresa cooked the meal. We then came back and enjoyed the crab, Thai rice, and rhubarb and berry cobbler, while watching whales frolic in the sea. We couldn't have asked for a more idyllic setting and more gracious hosts. Thank you so much to Todd and Teresa. I would highly recommend this tour.

I Got Crabs in Hoonah - My wife and I had read the previous reviews about this gem of a restaurant and they proved to be true. The owners were welcoming and very friendly. The crab was absolutely amazing as was the Thai rice. The owner catches the crab himself and they are very large and sweet. The restaurant is spotlessly clean as is the washroom. They provide a hand washing station which comes in handy. You can get a shuttle from Icy Straight Point to Hoonah and back or just enjoy the walk. We were told that 2024 is the last year you can walk up to just eat lunch as the owners will begin catering to food tours only in 2025. If we get back there, we will definitley book a tour as this is really a great experience.

Off the beaten path treat! - Just ate lunch - no tour. But it was fantastic! Great crab, rice and tea. And a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere away from the cruise ship crowds. Lovely couple.

Best excursion of our vacation - The Icy Point Strait Town Tour and Lunch is AMAZING. They are a super sweet husband and wife team and they make you feel like family. He picks you up at the same place the other excursions meet and drives you about 10 minutes to their beautiful restaurant to get crab fresh out of the water for lunch later. He then drives you to their other property to see his workshop and hike, or not if you don’t want to, around that property and pick and EAT wild blueberries. You then visit the totem pole carvers and feel VIP as he knows everyone. You then return to the restaurant to help clean and cook the crabs which our son just loved. We then had the best meal of our vacation of so much crab and her phenomenal Thai fried rice and thai chai tea. If we weren’t already full, topped it off with her fresh berry dessert. We hung out for a while on their waterfront looking and rocks, sea glass and so many shells. The rain didn’t even matter as this was a dream of a tour. He drove us back to town. (Also GLUTEN FREE was no problem at all, did not get sick.)
