Into the Heart of the Mayan Underworld

As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the mysteries of the ocean and the stories it holds. But this time, my journey took me inland, away from the crashing waves and into the heart of the Mayan underworld. The Actun Tunichil Muknal, or ATM Cave, is a sacred site that has been on my bucket list for quite some time. Known as the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher, it’s a place where history and adventure intertwine in the most captivating way.

The day began with a sense of anticipation as I geared up with a helmet and headlamp, ready to explore the depths of this ancient cave. The journey started with a 30-minute hike through the lush Belizean jungle, crossing rivers and wading through streams. The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of the forest enveloped us as we made our way to the cave’s entrance. It was a stark contrast to the salty breeze and rhythmic waves I’m accustomed to, but the thrill of discovery was just as exhilarating.

A Journey Through Time
