Chasing Whales and Puffins: A Húsavík Adventure on a Traditional Oak Ship
Drawn by the allure of Iceland’s whale watching capital, I embarked on a traditional oak ship tour in Húsavík. Join me as I recount the chilly yet magical experience of spotting puffins and a majestic humpback whale.
Setting Sail on the Traditional Oak Ship
As a digital nomad, I often find myself seeking out unique experiences that allow me to connect with nature and the local culture. When I heard about the Traditional Oak Ship Whale Watching Tour in Húsavík, Iceland, I knew it was something I had to try. Known as the whale watching capital of Iceland, Húsavík promised an adventure that would be both educational and awe-inspiring.
The day of the tour, I boarded the traditional oak ship, Bjossi Sor, with a sense of excitement and anticipation. The crew, knowledgeable and passionate about marine life, welcomed us aboard and provided us with thick coveralls to keep warm. Despite the chilly weather and light rain, the atmosphere was lively, and the promise of seeing whales in their natural habitat kept our spirits high.
We set off towards Puffin Island, where we were treated to the sight of these charming birds flying and diving around us. The crew shared fascinating insights into the lives of puffins, their migration patterns, and the environmental challenges they face. Although the distance made it difficult to capture perfect photos, the experience of watching them in their natural environment was unforgettable.
The Quest for Whales
After our time with the puffins, we ventured further into Skjálfandi Bay, eager to catch a glimpse of the majestic whales that call these waters home. The crew’s dedication to finding these gentle giants was evident as they extended our trip to explore more of the bay.
As we sailed, the crew educated us on the various species of whales, their migration habits, and the impact of the whaling industry on their populations. Their commitment to environmental conservation was inspiring, and it was clear that they were passionate about protecting these incredible creatures.
Just as we were beginning to lose hope, the crew spotted a congregation of boats in the distance. We headed towards them and were rewarded with the sight of a beautiful humpback whale. Watching it breach and dive gracefully through the water was a moment of pure magic, and I felt incredibly fortunate to witness such a spectacle.
Reflecting on the Experience
As we made our way back to the harbor, the crew served us hot chocolate, a comforting treat after the chilly adventure. Reflecting on the experience, I realized that while the traditional oak ship tour was memorable, I might have opted for the RIB boat tour if given another chance. The RIB boats, being faster, could potentially offer more opportunities for whale sightings, and I had other chances to see puffins during my travels.
Nonetheless, the tour with North Sailing was a highlight of my time in Iceland. Their focus on environmental education and conservation left a lasting impression, and I appreciated their efforts to provide an authentic and respectful wildlife experience. If you find yourself in Húsavík, I highly recommend embarking on this whale watching adventure. Whether you choose the traditional oak ship or the RIB boat, you’re in for an unforgettable journey into the heart of Iceland’s marine wonders.
