Highlights
  • Recreational Ayutthaya Biking - Here we start and finish our ride. Select the bicycles and adjust the seats and off we go.
  • Chao Praya River - ook even op zoeken
  • Pom Phet (Phet Fortress) - Pom Phet was the most important fortress, protecting the harbour where foreign ships were forced to anchor for inspection and unloading. No foreign ships travelling up the Chao Phraya River before were allowed beyond this point. In 1767, the Burmese were unable to penetrate Ayutthaya from this fort. The city walls were finally breached on the northeast side of the main island at the Maha Chai fortress to be exact. Pom Phet is one of the two remnants of old fortresses and now a public park.
  • Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam) - Wat Lokaya Sutha is a massive temple ruin. It is aligned toward an east/west axis. The monastery has been heavily restored, including floor tiles and brick floors throughout. Most of the temple exists only at the basic foundation level. This includes some stubs of pillars and basic walls. At the eastern entrance are the remnants of three vihans. Behind these sermon halls is a large 30 meters high, Late Ayutthaya period, Khmer-style prang. This prang-tower has a hollow entrance on its eastern side. The remains of an ubsot can be seen behind the prang. Only the basic foundation layer has survived, but there are many sema stones and the detritus of Buddha images. A large bell tower stands on the southwestern corner of this ubosot.

The highlight of this temple is its enormous reclining Buddha image (37 meters long and 8 meter high), which is located behind the ubosot.

  • Historic City of Ayutthaya - The Ayutthaya Historical Park comprises of the ruins of temples and palaces of the capital of the ancient Ayutthaya Kingdom. The park is located on an island surrounded by three rivers where the old capital used to be.

The Ayutthaya Kingdom, which existed from 1351 until 1767 was one of the largest and most prosperous empires of its time. The ruins of many impressive temples and palaces give an impression of the wealth of the ancient Kingdom.

  • Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - Wat Phra Si Sanphet (Thai: วัดพระศรีสรรเพชญ์; “Temple of the Holy, Splendid Omniscient”) was the holiest temple on the site of the old Royal Palace in Thailand’s ancient capital of Ayutthaya until the city was completely destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. It was the grandest and most beautiful temple in the capital and it served as a model for Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.
  • Wat Mahathat - Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.

One of the temple’s most photographed objects is the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree.

Great bike tour! - This great bike tour through Ayutthaya is highly recommended! The guide takes you past all the highlights of the dilapidated old capital and tells a lot about its interesting history. The bikes are comfortable. It's wonderful to get on a bike between the sights and not have to get into a van. It is recommended to take the early tour, because it gets very hot quickly. Because we were early we had many temples to ourselves. Drinks and a snack are well arranged. There is plenty of time for beautiful photos. Please note, you have to take a pound to get to the other side with your bicycle. We lifted our bicycle ourselves. If you cannot do this yourself, the guide will help you. In short: recommended!!

A great way to see the town - A well spent 3 hours seeing the highlights of Ayutthaya. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The bikes were in good condition and comfortable to ride. We travelled at a good pace, easily achievable by most people. Well worth doing

Amazing, informative, and fun! - I couldn’t imagine seeing this site any other way! The ability to ride bikes through the Serene pathways from temple to temple made this sight seeing extra fun, and even provided for a little exercise. The bikes were very good quality. Additionally, our tour guide Bella was the best tour guide we had on our 2 week trip to Thailand. Her English was perfect - way better than any other tour guides in Thailand (who can be hard to understand). She also was extremely informative of all of the historical facts behind the temples, right down to exact years. She even was willing to speak a lot about the current culture of Thailand and state of their society and government, which satisfied my curiosity. Could not recommend this enough!!

Acceptable - Little enthusiasm. Little knowledge in relation to history or culture. Some more information about the temples would have been nice.
