A pretty challenging but super rewarding hike - It seems complicated to get to Bach Ma from Hue. It requires an initial driver to get you to the gates. And another to drive you the 18km up a winding steep road until you are above the clouds. He leaves you to hike the five lakes and you make your way to the agreed meeting spot (not 18km away - but frankly the steepness and difficulty of the hike it may as well be 18km). The Forrest is lush. The water of each lake crystal clear. Some people had guides. Thank god because one of the guides was kind enough to give us pointers on how to not slip when crossing rushing rivers. And avoid pools of leeches. One of the lakes is deep and a few people were swimming but we were there for the hike. There are guide ropes for a lot of the route which is extremely helpful. To see the recovery from the destruction Agent Orange caused is heart warming. To read an American’s account of his tour near the peacebell is moving. Whilst my thighs paid me back for two days after the hike Back Ma National Forrest and the 5 Lake hike is a MUST do.

Walk, climb, view, eat and swim. - Pick up from the hotel was 45 Min late, but after that we had a great day: A good guide, and a lovely walk ( the 'adventure' option), not suitable for the infirm or those suffering from vertigo. A visit to an old US Army observation post/firebase, a fine picnic lunch and a swim in a beauty spot, under a waterfall. Good value and highly recommended.
